"Mar...sh...malio. No, wait... Ma...rio and... Luigi... The Mario Bros., I believe? Not that your names particularly matter. If you're here, then I suppose the Extension Corps must have failed. I should have destroyed you myself right away. No matter... No matter at all... My mission will soon be complete. My great inspiration will be reborn, and the world will become properly lonely. You, however, will not be there to see it. (Becomes angry.) You interrupted the rebirth... HOW DARE YOU?!"
—Zokket states his plan to destroy Concordia, then goes into battle versus the Bros. upon being confronted in his fortress, Mario & Luigi: Brothership

Zokket is the main antagonist of Mario & Luigi: Brothership. He acts as the leader of the Zokket Army who aims to cause Concordia's downfall by spreading a toxic substance/energy called "Glohm" throughout the region.

Profile[]

Physical Description[]

Zokket is a tall, humanoid figure. He has a white skull-like face with black eyes that have red pupils which turn narrow and golden when angered. His outfit consists of a top hat with red and green cables in it, and a dark red cloak resembling Cackletta's cloak and held by a clip that resembles a wire cutter. His boss battle reveals him to have long brown arms and his outfit to be a black robe with long blue sleeves. On his hands are white pentadactyl gloves.

Personality[]

Zokket is described as ruthless and stoic, yet having a faulty memory, getting names wrong, and being a stickler for numbers in his Japanese biography, exemplified by him calling Mario and Luigi Marigold and Linguini, respectively, until the Bros. storm his fortress a second time, as well as his habit of mangling the Extension Corps' names (calling them "High-Tension Corps" or "Flunksqueezer Corps," Ten "Toon," and Ecks "Eggs"). His mistreatment of the Extension Corps led them to bail on him out of fear of his punishment on them for being bested by the Bros. in his fortress. Prior to his boss fight, Zokket's stoic personality fades. However, it comes back briefly in his last moments, indicating satisfaction with that his plans will succeed.

History[]

A long time before the events of the game, Cozette, a Wattanist and Connie's mentor, watched over the Uni-Tree and Concordia before Zokket stole her body and ripped the continent apart courtesy of Reclusa, presumably destroying the continental shelf so the resultant islands drift around. During this time, or afterward, he formed the Zokket Army.

Zokket makes his debut in the present day when Mario and Luigi arrive at Desolatt Island. The duo witness Zokket's army kidnapping the residents. When the Bros. confront the bad guys, Zokket orders the Extension Corps to stop the Bros., making his leave shortly afterward.

The heroes later confront Zokket in the Great Lighthouse of the Color-Full Sea. Ecks tells him that he can handle it, and calls a monster known as the Sharpcask, who fights the Bros. but is slain. The heroes later confront Zokket and the Extension Corps in another lighthouse, where Zokket tells the Extension Corps off for disappointing him and being slow. Mario and Luigi return, and Zokket tells the Extension Corps to deal with it, after which Shun unleashes the Pipegunk, who is destroyed.

Zokket is later seen at Fortress Zokket, where he is seen before an egg (which contains a being known as Reclusa). He orders the Extension Corps to deal with the Koopa Troop, which the trio does by kidnapping Bowser Jr. When Bowser storms the fortress to get his son back, Zokket poisons Bowser with Glohm, forcing the Bros. to deal with him. Mario, Luigi, Bowser, and Bowser Jr. escape when Zokket unleashes a Glohm wave. Zokket, certain that Mario and Luigi perished during their getaway, taunts Connie, who proclaims that Cozette will return someday, much to his amusement.

Zokket is later seen at his fortress, ordering the Extension Corps to make sure Mario and Luigi cannot get to him, but the Bros. manage to get past. As the Bros. confront Zokket, he reveals his plan to revive Reclusa, so they fight him to stop him. After the battle, Zokket succumbs to his wounds, but donates his remaining energy to the egg gives Reclusa the energy it needs to reawaken. As the monster breaks out, Zokket's corpse disintegrates, and Cozette is retrieved and taken back to Shipshape Island.

Combat[]

Despite being able to fly during cutscenes, Zokket does not use this during his battle, being treated as a grounded target. He possesses several attacks. One of his attacks involves him tearing the wire cutter-shaped fastener of his cloak off and throwing it at a Bro., who has to repel it with a hammer strike. After the first repulsion, Zokket will summon a shield to protect his face and send the fastener flying at the Bro. opposite to the one who sent it at him, who must repel it himself as the first one did. A second move involves him charging lightning and throwing it. His target has to smash the ball back with his hammer, and can be identified by which hand Zokket used to throw his large lightning ball. Zokket's third attack involves him breaking his plier into dual swords and carving a triangle around his target. This creates an energy loop that contracts around the target, who must jump to avoid getting sliced in half, followed by the opposite Bro. as the loop rebounds. His last attack is copied from Cackletta's thunderbolt attack. This attack must be jumped over. Zokket signals which one of of the Bros. will be his target by raising the appropriate arm: right for Mario and left for Luigi. He can occasionally switch the Bros.' positions by summoning a whirlwind in his arena during the attack. When the Marios drop his health to half or below, Zokket infuses his attacks with Glohm; any brother who gets hit by Zokket's attacks at this point runs the risk of being infected, which in turn comes with the risk of being forced to betray his partner to Zokket. The still-free Bro. can free his partner from Zokket's control by killing either one, then using a 1-Up Mushroom to revive the possessed Bro., or having the possessed Bro. attack with a hammer and jump on the hammer. The possessed Bro. will also take damage to Special Points. Zokket cannot bring both Bros. to his side at the same time, preventing the battle from being unwinnable, but if Zokket defeats the Bro. not under his control, the player will be defeated since the corrupted Bro. cannot help the Bro. who did not get corrupted. Being the Zokket Army's leader, Zokket takes more damage if the player equips the Anti-Zokket Specialist Battle Plug.

Zokket is a Level 40 enemy with 8,400 hit points, an attack power of 214, a defense of 168, and a Speed of 539. His defeat nets 20,000 experience and 2,000 Coins, and he also drops the Glohm Guard Battle Plug.

Etymology[]

Zokket takes his name from a "socket," with the S voiced into a Z.

Nomenclature[]

Zokket is called "Zoketto" in Japanese (written ゾケット), with his name coming form the same source as English, albeit with the T doubled instead of the K; Cozette, interestingly, has the same letters for her name (Kotozetto; written ゾケット), but the K and Z have their positions swapped and there is an extra to between their respective syllables. His Spanish name, Shocke, is a partial corruption on choque ("shock") with the English translation of that word. Portuguese calls him "Ampério," with the name being a pun on império ("empire") and "ampere." In Italian, his name is Skonnet, which may come from the verb (di)sconnéttere ("to disconnect/unplug"). In French, he is called "Voltfas," from the words volt ("volt") and face ("face") and a pun on "volte-face," which means "change in position" in regards to policies and opinions. He is called "Shoqx" in Dutch, from "shock," and in German, he bears the name "Stekdov," from Steckdose ("socket") and the Russian patronymic surname suffix -ov (written -ов).

Trivia[]

  • Despite his role as the main villain of the game prior to his death, Zokket does not have his own battle theme, instead having the same battle theme that the Great Lighthouse bosses use.
