Yoshi's Island DS is the direct sequel of Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island; it is also the indirect sequel to Yoshi's Story. This game has fewer levels, but has updated graphics, new babies (in addition to the classic babies), and a whole new adventure. The graphics still retain the trademark "pen and pencil" style of the original.

One of its new features is a museum of enemies in the game accessible at any time. In this museum, all the enemies the Yoshis have defeated with Yoshi Eggs will appear here.

Story[]

Opening[]

After the events of Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island, Kamek and his evil army of Toadies decide to steal all of the babies in the Mushroom Kingdom, as well as other nearby areas including the whole Mushroom World. The Toadies are taking the babies to a mysterious floating castle by Kamek's lead. The Stork comes in and attacks two Toadies making them drop the babies they are carrying; The two babies then land on Yoshi's Island. It appears to the Yoshis that these two babies are Baby Mario and Baby Peach.

The Yoshis find the babies, and decide to help them. The Yoshis figure out that Baby Mario, once again, wants to save Baby Luigi and the other babies from Kamek and his Toadies. The Yoshis take the babies with them, and go on an adventure to rescue the kidnapped babies.

The Adventure Begins[]

The Yoshis start the adventure in World 1, Yoshi and Baby Mario traverse the grassy plains whilst dodging enemies such as Shy Guys, Crazee Dayzees, and Piranha Plants, after outrunning a Super Big Tap-Tap, they make it to the first fortress where they battle the Big Burt Bros., two Burts that have been enlarged by Kamek's magic. After defeating these two overgrown monsters, Yoshi and Baby Mario continue onward and from here, Yoshi can switch between Baby Mario and Baby Peach from the Stork Stops to utilize each Baby's abilities to traverse the terrain. After making it through more hurdles, the Yoshis and Babies reach the Castle, here, they fight and easily defeat the colossal Gilbert the Gooey, a giant Gooey Goon.

Discovering DK[]

Later on in the adventure, a group of Grinders overwhelm the team and kidnap Baby Mario and Baby Peach forcing Yoshi to rescue them. Whilst chasing the Grinders into the jungle, the Yoshis and the Stork find another baby, Baby Donkey Kong; The baby ape was somehow left behind when the Toadies were kidnapping all the other babies. With the help of Baby Donkey Kong, Yoshi is able to rescue Baby Mario and Baby Peach from the Grinders. After his helpful act, Baby Donkey Kong joins the team as a permanent member. The team then traverses an underground cave and later climbs a steep canyon with the help of Baby Peach's wind-floating ability before making it to a Haunted House. After solving some traps, the team comes face to face with a large Invisighoul named Hector the Reflector. Kamek uses his magic to make Hector invisible so as to only be seen in the mirror's reflection. Yoshi manages to best Hector and the team then progresses onward, down the canyon through the grasslands, back into the jungle before entering a large sewer network. Yoshi and the babies make their way through the mazey network before finally reaching the bottom where a large Bungee Piranha named Big Bungee Piranha. This Piranha Plant was quite threatening but thanks to the efforts of Yoshi he was able to trick the overgrown Piranha Plant into chewing on a sturdy Chomp Rock and toss three eggs at him thus defeating him. Quite sometime after that event, a cutscene ensues showing Yoshi attempting to carry Baby Mario, Baby Peach, and Baby Donkey Kong all at once, Yoshi then trips under the babies' weight and the Stork proceeds to grab Baby Peach and Baby Donkey Kong, Yoshi then realizes that he can't carry three babies at once and that it's best to just stick to one. Upon this discovery, Yoshi happily leaves with the Stork who is confused.

Water and Wario[]

The team reaches the island's beach. Here, they make their way through a river with many aquatic threats such as chomping Snap Jaws, an angry Nep-Enut, and a river infested with Lunge Fish. After this, they reach the coast of the beach where several Pirate Ships manned by Pirate Guys are found, the skies are also filled with Goonies, they also come across several islands which are linked to eachother. After avoiding several Bullet Bills, the team makes it to a colossal Battleship. Yoshi and the babies explore the ship avoiding or defeating several guards such as Koopa Troopas, Tap-Taps, Potted Ghosts, Boos, and more. Upon reaching the bottom of the ship, the team comes face to face with the Ship's head, Bessie Bass (possibly the first-known female Boss Bass). Kamek uses his magic to make Bessie a colossal man-eating fish, Bessie attempts to snack on Yoshi and the team but with three good shots mid-jump, Yoshi manages to defeat Bessie Bass. Upon exiting the Battleship, a huge rainstorm ensues thus causing a huge tidal wave to wash everybody away. The Yoshis wake up in a large damp cave and whilst exploring, also find Baby Wario, who like Baby Donkey Kong, was left behind; Baby Wario decides to join the party. With the help of Baby Wario's Magnet abilities, Yoshi is able to traverse the cave and thankfully finds Baby Mario, Baby Peach, Baby DK, and the Stork at the end. The team then exits the cave and returns to the adventure. They utilize Wario's magnet to progress forward before entering an underwater cave, this cave turns out to be a Tap-Tap domain and the team has yet another run in with the Super Big Tap-Tap who makes yet another attempt to crush Yoshi and the rest but the team once again manages to escape and they eventually reach the Castle, this castle is flowing with water and other hazards, the team eventually reaches a sandy chamber where they encounter Priscilla the Peckish. Yoshi taunts Priscilla into jumping out for a snack but scores a few good hits on this monstrous ant finishing her off. Upon beating Priscilla the Peckish, after being with the gang for some time, Baby Wario decides to join a team of Bandits instead because Wario is very greedy as are the Bandits.

Bowser Drops In[]

The team then reach the higher parts of the island, upon making their way through some floating platforms, across some Mine Carts in the canyons, and through the clouds, they reach yet another Fortress. This Fort is filled with lava and various other guards including Hot Lips, Fangs, Podoboos, and Shy Guys. After utilizing the Number Balls and placing them in their correct slots, the team eventually reaches Six-Face Sal, a massive wheel with six faces. The faces all spit Needlenoses at the team but Yoshi manages to score a couple good hits on him before finishing him off. It is revealed after beating Priscilla the Peckish that the future Bowser and future Kamek are looking for seven Star Children, young children that have magical stars in them. If someone (one of the Star Children) collects all the stars, then he or she will rule the world. It is soon discovered that Bowser and Kamek are kidnapping the helpless babies in hopes of finding the seven that have stars within them. Kamek then kidnaps Baby Bowser (while the Kamek of the past tries to stop him). When Baby Bowser is brought to the Castle, he throws a tantrum and makes a few snarky remarks much to the anger of the older Bowser. After a fight between Baby Bowser and Adult Bowser, Bowser throws Baby Bowser out of the castle with his fire breath. After the Yoshis and the babies continue the adventure, they end up in a small cave where they find Baby Bowser who lands on Yoshi. Baby Bowser complains to the Yoshis that his future self is "stupid", and decides to join the Yoshis, even though the Yoshis and the team are worried that Baby Bowser might suddenly attack them. Baby Bowser proves to be a useful (and very unlikely) ally as the team enters the snowy mountains of the island. Baby Bowser's fire breathing abilities are beyond useful for melting ice cubes blocking the way, they then make their way across several icy platforms where Bumpties are seen lingering, Yoshi then skis down a large hill whilst avoiding the ice rocks. The team then reaches the next Castle. In the castle, they battle heaps of Shy Guys and Zeus Guys before coming face to face with a giant robotic Stilt Guy controlled by hundreds of smaller Shy Guys, Big Guy the Stilted. Thanks to Baby Bowsers, fire breathing abilities, the team is able to easily beat Big Guy by knocking it into the lava and ground pounding it's head three times causing it to shatter apart releasing all the smaller Shy Guys controlling it. However, Baby Bowser does not stay for the whole adventure; Later in the game after the team exits Big Guy the Stilted's castle, Kamek arrives noticing Baby Bowser (whilst oblivious to the rest of the team), Baby Bowser then becomes upset and he leaves with Kamek and falls of the broomstick mid-flight abandoning the team. Back at the Castle, Bowser and Kamek are discussing the information about the Star Children, Kamek using a Crystal Ball, checks every baby they have kidnapped (except Baby Luigi who was hiding) but finds out that none of them have the star inside of them. Bowser grows angry and sends the Toadies to keep looking for more babies.

Final World[]

Yoshi and the babies then arrive at a barren grassland with several Chomps and Stompin' Chomp. They later have some close encounters with some Incoming Chomps and even a Chomp Shark. Upon escaping these beasts, the team makes it to a canyon filled with Goonies, the team hitches rides on these birds to cross the skies before reaching a jungle with a large village where various Spear Guys, Dancing Spear Guys, and Pike Guys have set their residence. The team avoids these hazards before making it to a Fortress high above the Island, this fortress is well guarded with Koopa Troopas, Bullet Bills, Paratroopas, and Blow Hards. Upon flying to the top of the fortress, the team comes face to face with Moltz the Very Goonie. A Very Goonie that has been enlarged by Kamek. Moltz uses very devastating attacks against Yoshi such as ground pounds, feather spawning, as well as summoning many Rocket Guys to attack. Despite all this, Yoshi manages to defeat Moltz the Very Goonie which causes all the Goonies in the area to become Skeleton Goonies (as shown in the later levels of the world). The team then enters a very dangerous cavern filled with lava streams and is also home to Skeleton Goonies, Stompin' Chomps, Blow Hards, Ghost Piranhas, Cloud Drops, and more. Upon escaping this cavern, the team enters yet another dangerous lava cavern filled with underground volcanoes. The team then had to find four Number Balls and place them in their slots in order to escape this deadly cavern. Upon their survival, the team then reaches the skies where they make their way across dozens of more traps and foes. At last, Yoshi and the babies arrive at Bowser's Castle where all the babies come back to help Yoshi travel through the castle. Upon reaching the entrance, Yoshi sees Baby Wario and Baby Bowser fighting over the Castle and who gets to keep the treasure. They then proceed to rejoin the team. After Yoshi and the babies enter a rocketship and eventually reach Bowser's Castle, upon making their way through the last sets of obstacles, the team finally reaches the final room. However, when they finally get to the top of the castle, Baby Bowser tells the Yoshis, Baby Mario, Baby Peach, Baby Donkey Kong, Baby Wario, and the Stork to leave. However, when they don't leave, Baby Bowser thinks Yoshi and the team are there to steal his treasure. Baby Bowser fights Yoshi but Yoshi defeats him easily.

After Baby Bowser's defeat, Kamek arrives in shock at what the team has done and helps him up. Bowser then comes in the room and is angry at what Yoshi did to his younger self and fights Yoshi and the team, Bowser puts up a good fight but Yoshi bests him and Bowser gets defeated, just like his younger self. However, Kamek helps Bowser to become Giant Bowser. Giant Bowser and the four babies (Baby Mario, Baby Peach, Baby Donkey Kong, and Baby Wario) with four Yoshis (Green Yoshi, Pink Yoshi, Yellow Yoshi. and Purple Yoshi) fight against the Giant Bowser using Giant Eggs, Giant Bowser attempts to scorch the succeeding team with fireballs and crush them with Meteors but the team manages to sidestep these attacks and after a long battle are eventually able to defeat him. After Bowser is defeated, Kamek escapes, with four Toadies carrying the defeated body of Bowser right behind him. Baby Bowser decides to escape with Bowser and Kamek too, and holds on to his flying broomstick.

Ending[]

The Yoshis save all the kidnapped babies (including Baby Luigi), and escape the Castle before it explodes. The Storks takes all the babies back to their home, except for Baby Wario who is homeless. Supposedly, the Stork adopts Baby Wario and takes him to a raft where Baby Bowser's treasure ended up. Meanwhile, a flying rock hits Kamek's broomstick, and Baby Bowser lets go of the broomstick. He falls down right in his treasure where Baby Wario and Baby Bowser start arguing about who gets to keep the treasure with the Stork, a Grinder, and a Tube Guy watching in confusion.

It is then revealed that the seven Star Children were: Baby Mario, Baby Luigi, Baby Peach, Baby Donkey Kong, Baby Wario, Baby Bowser and a newborn Baby Yoshi, who had just hatched from his Yoshi Egg at the end of the game.

Modes[]

For each of the three player files available, there are four modes to choose from: Adventure, Mini-games, Time Trial (unlockable) and Options.

Adventure[]

A long amount of gameplay comes from adventure mode, similarly played out like the original game. Throughout the five unique worlds, a different colored Yoshi takes on one out of eight levels, with a mini-boss in Level 4 and a boss in Level 8 of each world. Enemies, items, and coins litter the levels, as well as collectibles. When an enemy hits a Yoshi, the baby is knocked loose from his or her back, and the star power – the source of the protective bubble that keeps the Toadies from taking the baby – goes down by one star per second. If that number goes down to 0, Toadies take the baby and a life is lost. The star power starts at 10 in each level, and if a baby is recovered with less than 10 stars, the star power automatically goes back to 10 again at a slow recovery rate; the star power maxes out at 30. Groups of 5 stars often come in Winged Clouds and crates.

Minigames[]

There are various Mini-games to be unlocked in Adventure Mode: Tulip Shooter, (Yoshi must eat enemies and spit them out into a tulip); Flutter Challenge, (Yoshi must try to flutter-kick as far as possible); Bouncy Maze, (Yoshi must maneuver his way through a simple maze of Bouncies); Speed-Eater, (Yoshi must try to swallow as many enemies as possible); Flip (cards can be flipped over to earn 1-Ups; and Egg Toss, (Yoshi must hit targets with eggs). All mini-games have a set time limit. Achieving a high score in any mini-game will award the player with a 1-Up. Harder versions of all the mini-games can be unlocked by collecting all the Baby Coins in a world.

Time Trial[]

Unlockable once Adventure mode has been beaten, Time Trial is just like Adventure mode, however, the player is timed. The player has one-hundred minutes to finish the game – even when the player presses the Start Button, the time keeps going.

Babies[]

New to the sequel at certain spots are Stork Stops, which let Yoshis change babies, providing different unique abilities:

  • Baby MarioM Blocks become tangible, providing stepping stones. A Yoshi can also dash at a great speed, allowing the Yoshi to escape from certain enemies. Yoshi can flutter far and normally.
  • Baby Peach – She carries a parasol, which helps Yoshi able to flutter further to get his way and a bit higher, but also a bit shorter than Mario. The parasol can help Yoshi fly his wind currents up or down; Yoshi eggs not jumping off walls, due to carrying her on his back.
  • Baby Donkey Kong – He can climb vines and chains, carrying Yoshi with him. He can also do a DK Dash Attack, defeating most enemies. His eggs don't bounce, but they go faster and create a miniature explosion that can grab more coins and even defeat enemies or activate winged clouds just blocked off by solid wall.
  • Baby Wario – His magnet attracts coins facing it (even through solid walls) and can move Magnet Blocks and Magnet Platforms. His eggs will bounce off of walls.
  • Baby Bowser – He can breathe fire, but Yoshi doesn't swallow any enemies. Often, though, his fire blast is the equivalent of an egg, being able to break winged clouds and destroy dirt walls as well as melting ice, but his blasts don't bounce off walls however his egg tosses do.

Forms[]

A Yoshi can morph into several different types of vehicles with the help of a Morph Bubble. Morph Bubbles appear many times in the game. There are three forms:

  • Helicopter: The helicopter is able to make a Yoshi fly for a short time.
  • Submarine: The submarine can make a Yoshi swim underwater (Yoshis in the game, can't swim underwater).
  • Mole Tank: This tank makes a Yoshi able to dig through small openings and dirt.

To turn back into a Yoshi, the Yoshi must either touch a Yoshi Block or wait until a little while and time runs out, as the forms only last for a few seconds. However, when the Yoshi is turned back into a dinosaur, he will also return to the Morph Bubble if he fails to reach the Yoshi block in time. Additional forms from the original game like the train and the car forms were cut out from this sequel.

Vehicles[]

Yoshis can also hop into or onto various vehicles. There are five vehicles:

  • Kangaroo: The Kangaroo hops on its own, but pressing and holding left or right tells which way the Kangaroo should go, and how far it should go. Also, holding the A button will let the Kangaroo float.
  • Stilts: Hopping on stilts allows the Yoshi to walk around in the same manner as the Stilt Guy does.
  • Carts: Hopping in a cart makes it roll along a track on its own. Players cannot change the direction.
  • Skis: Found in some ice-and-snow levels, players cannot change the direction of skis; however jumping is possible.
  • Rocket: Some huts lead to space launch pads, allowing Yoshi to hop into a rocket and blast into space. Pressing left and right turns the rocket and Y gives extra thrust.

Bonus Challenges[]

Any Flowers the player collects in a level will appear in the Goal Roulette at the end of a level. After a Yoshi passes through the ring, the spinning will get slower. If it stops on a flower, the player will be able to play a mini-game and probably earn 1-ups. There are five different flowers in each level-here is a list of the mini-games that may pop up if the player is able to get a flower in the Goal Roulette.

  • Flip Cards
  • Scratch and Match
  • Match Cards
  • Roulette
  • Slot Machine

Worlds and Levels[]

Yoshi's Island DS has five Worlds each of which have 8 main levels, 6 normal levels which fit the World's theme and 2 Castles located halfway and at the end of a world where Yoshi must do battle with a large enemy enhanced by Kamek's dark magic. In addition to the main levels, each world contains two bonus levels. One Secret level and one Extra level, these levels are typically more challenging than the main levels and they require special conditions to unlock. All the secret levels can be unlocked by beating World 5-8 (At Last, Bowser's Castle!) while the extra levels are unlocked by attaining a total of 800 points in a world (this is typically achieved by getting 100 points in the eight main levels). Getting 100 points in all eight levels can prove to be tricky but with the secret level unlocked, any points earned there are applied to the grand total so if the points earned from the secret level hit the 800 mark, the the extra level is unlocked. Additionally, each world also has a Minigame which can be played an unlimited number of times for extra lives, these are unlocked once 700 total points are attained for a world.

Similarities to Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island[]

  • The first piece of the first level of World 1 is exact the same as the one from it's predecessor.
  • The first mid-boss battle contains a Burt.
  • The first world boss is a blob-like creature.
  • The second mid-boss is a Ghost whose size changes throughout the battle.
  • The third mid-boss is an aquatic enemy.
  • The forth last world boss is a Piranha Plant and Nipper Plants as well as Piranha Buds are present during the battle.
  • The fourth Mid-Boss is also pink and round (but there are six of them).
  • The fourth World Boss is a sub-species of an enemy that appeared in earlier games and appeared very much.
  • In the 5th world, there's a boss that is a bird, that is an enemy.
  • The penultimate world contains two different themes for both halves (being a Cloudy Sky and a Frozen Mountain respectively).
  • There is a giant golden Tap-Tap in a possible path in Bowser's Castle.
  • The first final battle is against Baby Bowser and the last is against a supersized Bowser.
  • The final level is not explored by a Blue Yoshi but Green Yoshi.

Trivia[]

  • Yoshi's Island DS would have originally supported Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection, but it was later taken out.
  • The game was originally titled Yoshi's Island 2, like at E3 2006.
  • Originally, the player could only destroy enemies by jumping on them with Baby Mario, as seen in the E3 demo version.
  • When it was released in Japan, the game was number one on the charts for a full two weeks.
  • In the movie before starting a new game, a Toady can also be seen holding a baby that looks very similiar to Captain Olimar. This baby is also in other scenes.
  • In the movie before starting the game, a Toady can be seen holding a blonde-haired and pointy-eared baby. This could be Link from The Legend of Zelda series.
