Yikes! Boiling Hot! is the secret stage of World 2 in Yoshi's Island DS, a Black Yoshi takes control in this level. This level is unlocked after At Last, Bowser's Castle! is completed. This level takes place in a deep-underground lava cavern at the island's mantle filled with lava oceans, lava falls, countless enemies, and dangerous volcanic activity. The level itself is divided into three major sections, the first taking place very deep underground with only red, plate-like, underground, square rocks being visible in the background, the second area takes place in an area with several underground volcanoes which are constantly erupting, and the third area takes place in a simple lava cave with several lava rivers in the background. The level also comes with a fair share of traps and proceeding slowly is the best call when dealing with these.

Walkthrough[]

Note: It is recommended to start this level as either Baby Mario or Baby Peach, the former's fast speed allows him to clear the Countdown Platforms quickly while the latter can use the wind to reach the upper ledges in the second area easier.

Starting off the level, advance to the right and hop on the first Teeter Totter, each of the three Teeter Totters in this area have Red Coins below them so tip them low enough to be able to grab the Red Coin and then hop to the next Teeter Totter before the one you're standing on falls into the lava below, after you've grabbed the Red Coins, hop onto the Arrow Wheel and guide it upward (once you've hopped on the Arrow Wheel, the lava below starts rising, the Arrow Wheel you're using is also a blue one meaning it will disappear after some time so guide it quickly). Guide the Arrow Wheel straight avoiding the Fangs that come at you and steer clear of the cascading lava. Upon reaching the top, hop across the Teeter Totters and watch out for the Blow Hards above which spit Needlenoses at you. Continue to the right hopping across the descending stone slabs while watching out for the Bungee Piranhas above, from here, run across the One-Jump Platforms and grab the Coins as you go, drop down to the lower Countdown Platform to grab the Smiley Flower and then quickly return to the track above hopping across the remaining One-Jump Platforms and Teeter Totters and then exit the area before the rising lava below catches up to you.

Upon reaching the next area, use Baby Peach's wind abilities to reach the ledge above and tag the Middle Ring (if you're not using Baby Peach, bounce off one of the incoming Fangs to reach the ledge instead). Tag the Stork Stop on the next ledge to switch to Baby Peach (if you're not using her) and use her abilities to glide the winds in this area, there are several coin lines with rows of two Coins here, both of these contain a Red Coin each, there are also dual Coins in this area, one is on the top left ledge and the other is below the Blow Hard on the underside of the ledge (these contain a Red Coin each) (which totals to four Red Coins, be careful of the cascading lava as you grab the Red Coins, once done, fly to the right but watch out for the occasional lava falls, wait for them to recede before progressing, Fangs will continue coming at you periodically so avoid these too. Once you've cleared the first lava fall, drop down to the ledge below and grab all the Coins in the dual-Coin line, one of these is a Red Coin, next drop down and use the wind to flutter the the ledge with the ! Switch, hit the switch to activate the switch blocks to reach the ledge with the Smiley Flower (the Smiley Flower is blocked by cascading lava preventing you from getting it without hitting the switch, egg tosses won't work either as they dissolve after hitting the cascading lava). Once gotten, glide to the lower ledge to the right and grab all the Coins in the dual-Coin lot as one of them is a Red Coin (but watch out for the Needlenose Plant that spits Needlenoses), as you glide back up to the main path, be careful of the cascading lava, from here, watch out for the next lava fall, wait for it to recede, advance to the right, and drop down and grab the Coins in the dual-Coin]] lot as once again, one of them is a Red Coin. Next, you will find some safe ground, switch to Baby DK at the Stork Stop here and swing across the large rope to the upper ledge, hop to the rope here and grab any Coins here as well as the Smiley Flower on the ledge (be careful not to swing the rope too much as you may swing it into the cascading lava if you do). Once you've gotten the goodies here, drop down to the lower ledge and advance to the right, there's a Stork Stop here too, use it to switch to Baby DK (but chance are you're already using him from the last Stork Stop but it's there in case you fluttered all the way here instead). Climb the vines above and grab the Coins along them, jump to the higher left vine upon scaling the initial vine and use it to grab the upper Coins and even a Red Coin, once done, jump back to the initial vine and exit the area through the right ledge.

In the next area, you will enter a new lava cavern (slightly closer to the surface), advance to the right and watch out for the Hot Lips in the lava that spews lava at you, you will also need to watch out for the Ball 'n' Chains and wait for the spikes to be out of the way before hopping to the platforms (if it helps, stun the Hot Lips with an egg), grab the Smiley Flower by the upper Ball 'n' Chains and then hop to the Donut Lifts and then the platform (be careful of the second Hot Lips here as it shots it's lava in an arc rather than straight up (but you should still be safe on the platform), use the Egg Block here to fill your egg supply and use your eggs to hit the soft stones holding up the stone slabs, as the stone slabs descend, use them to hop across the lava safely, the last two stone slabs are thinner than the first two and upon dropping the fourth stone slab, a lava fall immediately descends so be sure to wait on the third one for the lava fall to die down before hopping to the fourth slab. Once you've cleared the slabs, hop to the rope connected to the zip line (remain as high as possible on the rope as the rope zooms fast and dips into the lava below), there are six Coins along this track with the two at the end being Red Coins, once you've cleared this, immediately hop to the vine above (if you missed one of the Red Coins, use an egg to obtain them instead). Once done, exit the area through the right.

Upon entering the next area, tag the Middle Ring above the logs sticking out of the lava, from here, jump to the next set of logs and stone slabs (there is a Red Coin above the slab), from here, jump to the partially-submerged Ferris Wheel and quickly grab the Smiley Flower and then hop off the paddle before it sinks (you can also toss an egg from one of the upper paddles as well), from here, hop across the slab and the logs (whilst watching out for the Co-Blarggs and kill the Wild Ptooie Piranha on the stone block (this stone block is between two logs which both have Red Coins above them), from here, continue hopping across the logs and slabs (and watch out for the Hot Lips as he spews his lava in an arc), from here, grab the Red Coin on the end log and then jump to the dense stone platforms, tag the Stork Stop and immediately switch to Baby Mario with all speed as there is a Crusher Blargg below the rocks that will destroy them (knocking the Stork Stop into the lava (without Baby Mario, this level is impossible to finish due to the required use of the M Blocks so make sure to switch to him as quick as possible)). Run to the right and grab the two Red Coins here (toss an egg at the Crusher Blargg to sink it back in the lava as it will move in your direction and smash the rocks you're standing on), from here, leap to the remaining rock platforms (or flutter to the M Blocks if the Crusher Blargg destroyed them all), and hop across the M Blocks (the Crusher Blargg cannot destroy the M Blocks but it is still tall enough to reach you so watch out, additionally, Fangs are see whizzing about too so be careful of these)), at the end of the M Block track, hit the lone M Block above to sprout a Flower Plant to climb, toss an egg at the Red Coins in the lava niche halfway up, from here, climb the rest of the stalk to reach the top and jump through the GOAL! Ring to finish the level.

Trivia[]

  • In the Nintendo Official Player's Guide, the third section on the map still shows the same background as the level's first section despite the background being the lava river background in the actual game, this error is not intact on the fourth section's map which retains the correct background from the game.
