Yellow Yoshis are a color variation of the Yoshi first appearing in Super Mario World. Yellow Yoshis are typically considerate and caring for their friends but they are also more sturdy and tough on their foes. When not battling enemies or bosses, Yellow Yoshis enjoy eating, of course, and taking naps. Yellow Yoshis are known for their large appetites and are often craving fruits.
History[]
Super Mario World[]
In Super Mario World Yellow Yoshis have the ability to make mini-earthquakes and fall faster with a Koopa Shell in their mouth, in addition to spitting fireballs or flying if the shell is red or blue respectively. They can be found as Baby Yoshis in Star World 3 and Star World 5. When they are first found, Mario/Luigi will have to feed them five enemies or objects before they mature into an adult Yoshi that they can ride on. Yellow Yoshis have the typical traits of a Green Yoshi, though Yellow Yoshis have the ability to create sand clouds when they land, which defeats most enemies nearby, and they fall faster when holding a Koopa Shell, in addition to spitting fireballs or flying if the shell is red or blue respectively.
In the Game Boy Advance remake Super Mario World: Super Mario Advance 2, once a Yellow Yoshi has been found in the Star World, it can be found in a Question Block in place of a Green Yoshi, provided it is Super Mario who hits a block containing a Yoshi Egg.
Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island / Yoshi's Island: Super Mario Advance 3[]
Yellow Yoshis appear in Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island as well as Yoshi's Island: Super Mario Advance 3. In these games, they are playable in the fourth level of each world, (these being the Forts) and they always take on the mid-boss of each world as well. Yellow Yoshis retain the same abilities as the regular Yoshis in these games and are playable in Burt the Bashful's Fort, Bigger Boo's Fort, Prince Froggy's Fort, Marching Milde's Fort, Sluggy the Unshaven's Fort, and Tap-Tap the Red Nose's Fort. In the original SNES version, the Yellow Yoshi was a more dark yellow color while in the GBA remake of the game, he was changed to a lighter yellow.
Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars[]
Yellow Yoshis appear in Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars as residents of Yo'ster Isle.
Tetris Attack[]
A Yellow Yoshi called Little Yoshi appears in Tetris Attack, regular Yellow Yoshis are absent however.
Yoshi's Story[]
A Yellow Yoshi appears as a playable character in Yoshi's Story as one of the many playable Yoshis that you can choose from before starting a level. A Yellow Yoshi wears green shoes and a red saddle in this game, a color scheme also present in most later games.

Paper Mario[]
Yellow Yoshis appear in Paper Mario where they can be seen residing in Yoshi Village on Lavalava Island. Here, they give Mario and his allies various hints about exploring the island.
Mario Kart: Super Circuit[]
A Yellow Yoshi appears in Mario Kart: Super Circuit exclusive to the multiplayer mode when playing with players that don't have Mario Kart: Super Circuit inserted inside their Game Boy Advance. Player 4 is always selected as a Yellow Yoshi.
Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga[]
Yellow Yoshis are seen again in Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga. In this game, they can be found all over Yoshi Theater, a theater run by the Yoshi fanboy Boddle. One Yellow Yoshi is also shown to be hungry and must be given a Bean Fruit, one a Bean Fruit is given to the Yellow Yoshi, the Yellow Yoshi will reward Mario and Luigi with a Neon Egg.
Super Mario 64 DS[]
A Yellow Yoshi appears in Super Mario 64 DS as one of the four playable characters during the game's VS Mode (alongside a Green Yoshi, Red Yoshi, and a Blue Yoshi). Player 4 controls the Yellow Yoshi. The Yellow Yoshi's abilities are the same as those of the other three Yoshis, they can swallow their rivals to take Coins and Stars from them as well as grab a Mario Cap, Luigi Cap, or a Wario Cap to gain their respective abilities.
Yoshi Touch & Go[]
In Yoshi Touch & Go, you can acquire a Yellow Yoshi by achieving a score of at least 5,000-6,000 yards in the game. Here, the Yellow Yoshi can carry a total of 40 eggs and is an average-speeded Yoshi.
Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time[]
Yellow Yoshis appear again in Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time. In this game, they are seen residing on Yoshi's Island, they alongside all the other Yoshis are eaten by the colossal Yoob (a giant Yoshi-like robot that was placed on the island by Princess Shroob). When Mario, Luigi, Baby Mario, and Baby Luigi themselves end up inside Yoob upon reaching the top of the island, they find all the Yoshis inside including the Yellow Yoshi. The Yellow Yoshi can be seen lying on the floor suffering from immense hunger. Mario and Luigi then send Baby Mario and Baby Luigi into one of the hollow stumps where they find a Question Block which contains a piece of fruit inside. The plumbers then give the Yellow Yoshi his fruit, upon eating this snack, the Yellow Yoshi proceeds to help the Green Yoshi roll the Chomp Rock to make an escape route. Once the path forward is opened, the Yoshis advance further, during the battle with Sunnycide, the second Yoshi to be freed from the Yoob Eggs each time is a Yellow Yoshi in the Japanese and European versions of the game (in the battle, the Yellow Yoshi replaces the Black Yoshi featured in the USA version of the game). Upon Sunnycide's defeat, all the Yoshis including the Yellow Yoshis manage to escape Yoob and return to their normal lives on the island.
Yoshi's Island DS[]
Yellow Yoshis return in Yoshi's Island DS retaining the same role as before, they are once again playable in the fourth level of each world (these being the Castles) and always take on the world's mid-bosses. Yellow Yoshis are playable in the levels, Castle of the Big Burt Bros., Hector the Reflector's Haunted House, Bessie Bass's Battleship, Six-Face Sal's Fort, and The Fort of Moltz the Very Goonie. A Yellow Yoshi is also seen during the final battle as Baby DK's Yoshi. The Yellow Yoshi is playable during the fight if Yoshi enters the boss door with Baby DK.
New Super Mario Bros. Wii[]
Yellow Yoshis appear again in New Super Mario Bros. Wii as one of the four rideable Yoshis (alongside the Green Yoshi, Pink Yoshi, and the Cyan Yoshi). The Yellow Yoshi is always the second Yoshi to be hatched retains the same abilities as the other Yoshis, being able to swallow enemies, stomp on spiked enemies harmlessly, the Yellow Yoshi can also swallow Berries and if he swallows five, the plumbers will be granted with a power-up or a 1-Up Mushroom. The Yellow Yoshi is Luigi's signature Yoshi.
Super Mario Galaxy 2[]
Yellow Yoshis themselves are absent from Super Mario Galaxy 2 however Yoshi can become a Yellow Yoshi by swallowing a Bulb Berry. While under the effects of the Bulb Berry, Yoshi is a glowing Yellow Yoshi that has the power to reveal hidden paths, walkways, and terrain that are only walkable when revealed (otherwise there is a heap of abyss in between). The effects are only temporary and as Yoshi starts to lose his glow, more of the terrain around him starts to fade however, Yoshi can swallow more Bulb Berries to prolong the effects. The Bulb Berries effects can also reveal hidden portraits as well as the sweets below the wrappers in the Sweet Mystery Galaxy.
New Super Mario Bros. U / New Super Luigi U / New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe[]
Although regular Yellow Yoshis are absent in New Super Mario Bros. U as well as New Super Luigi U and New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe the Glowing Baby Yoshi appears, this Baby Yoshi is a Yellow Yoshi that has the ability to emit light in dark areas.
Mario & Luigi: Dream Team[]
Yellow Yoshis make a reappearance in Mario & Luigi: Dream Team where they are seen vacationing on Pi'illo Island alongside some Green Yoshis and Red Yoshis. The Yellow Yoshis can be seen in the hotels of Pi'illo Castle as well as Mushrise Park, and Wakeport enjoying their vacation, they can be talked to as any other NPC.
Yoshi's New Island[]
Yellow Yoshis return in Yoshi's New Island reprising their role from the previous Yoshi's Island games. In this game, they are once again playable in the fourth level of each world (these being the Forts) and always take on Kamek in a mini boss fight. The Yellow Yoshis are playable in the levels Fort Bucket Booby Trap, Beware the Boo Brigade, Slime Drop Drama, Fort Key Calamity, Ready, Steady, Go!, and Spray Day Mayday.
Mario Kart 8 / Mario Kart 8 Deluxe[]
Yellow Yoshi returns as a playable character in Mario Kart 8 as of the November 2014 update. In this game, he (alongside several other colored Yoshis) can be unlocked by purchasing both DLC packs. The Yellow Yoshi can be selected through a dropdown menu which comes up when selecting Yoshi. In Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, the Yellow Yoshi and all the other colored Yoshis are unlocked by default and don't need to be unlocked or purchased. The Yellow Yoshi (like all the other Yoshis) is player-exclusive meaning CPU Yellow Yoshis never race.
Yoshi's Woolly World[]
Yellow Yoshis appear as playable in Yoshi's Woolly World, as well as Poochy & Yoshi's Woolly World. After Baby Bowser has been beaten, seven basic-colored Yoshis are freed, including a Yellow Yoshi who proceeds to become playable.
Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam[]
A Yellow Yoshi appears in Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam in the Gloomy Woods village. He has found a huge melon the Mario, Luigi, and Paper Mario want to feed a Wiggler who possesses the power to clear the path forward. When they ask for the melon, the Yellow Yoshi refusing to give up his melon so easily challenges the plumbers to a race, with the winner getting the melon. During the race, the Yellow Yoshi flutter jumps to cross gaps, along with playing dirty by ground pounding when the plumbers are nearby. When the plumbers win the race, the Yoshi reluctantly gives up the melon who they proceed to give to the Wiggler, the Yellow Yoshi later warns them of his friend (a Green Yoshi) on Mount Brr who is much more faster and skilled than he is.
Paper Mario: Color Splash[]
Yellow Yoshis appear again in Paper Mario: Color Splash, here, they are seen locked inside a cage alongside several other Yoshis in the Emerald Circus and unlike most games, the Yellow Yoshis here are actually wild creatures that get a kick out of swallowing anyone that comes near. After Lemmy Koopa's disappearance during his performance, the Yoshi cage mysteriously opens freeing all the Yoshis inside. During Mario's battles in the circus, a Yellow Yoshi may occasionally show up and attempt to swallow him. If successful, the Yellow Yoshi will digest Mario's Battle Card and spit Mario back out for some damage however if Mario blocks the attack, the Yellow Yoshi will leave harmlessly.
Super Mario Run[]
Yellow Yoshi appears as a playable character in Super Mario Run. He was added in the game with the release of the version 2.0.0 update on March 22, 2017. He can be unlocked after purchasing Yellow Yoshi's House from the Kingdom Builder shop, which becomes available once you have collected 300 Blue Toads, 300 Green Toads, and 200 Purple Toads. Alongside having all the abilities of Yoshi, Yellow Yoshi can recruit more Yellow Toads in the Toad Rallies.
Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga + Bowser's Minions[]
Yellow Yoshis appear again in Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga + Bowser's Minions reprising their role from the original game. Here, they are once again found in Yoshi Theater run by the Yoshi fanatic Boddle. Just as before, there is one Yellow Yoshi that is hungry and wants to eat a Bean Fruit and giving him one will reward the plumbers with a Yellow Neon Egg. During the Minion Quest: The Search for Bowser sidestory, Yellow Yoshis along with various other Yoshis can be seen on the touchscreen in the theater watching the story play out.
Yoshi's Crafted World[]
Yellow Yoshis return in Yoshi's Crafted World with the same role as in previous games, they are among one of the selectable Yoshis and can be played as in any level of the game.
Mario Kart Tour[]
Regular Yellow Yoshis don't appear in Mario Kart Tour but two costume-wearing Yellow Yoshis called Yoshi (Kangaroo) and Yoshi (Gold Egg) appear as playable characters.
Mario Party Superstars[]
A Yellow Yoshi makes an appearance in Mario Party Superstars on the Yoshi's Tropical Island board. He can be seen resting on a large Watermelon on the top of the left island by the Item Shop. He doesn't do much in-game apart from watch the game play out.

- Interestingly, an official artwork for Yoshi's Island DS shows Baby Bowser riding a Yellow Yoshi despite Baby Bowser never appearing in any levels with the Yellow Yoshi in the actual game (not counting At Last, Bowser's Castle! where the Yellow Yoshi appears as Baby DK's Yoshi for the final battle).
