World 8-4 is the forty-second level of Super Mario 3D Land.
The world is one of the few Ghost House levels of the game. It opens with Mario in a small corridor, and at its end, the platform breaks off of the room, moving across the large crevasse before it. Across the crevasse, many coins can be obtained, however, several Boos will attempt to attack Mario. A separate corridor this one riddled with Question Blocks awaits Mario on the other side. From here, Mario rides a large platform with arrows signifying the direction it moves. Along this path, blocks of varying sizes move out of the wall, attempting to hinder Mario's speed with the platform or potentially knock him over the ledge. At the bottom level of the path, Mario finds more Boos accompanied Tail Boos. At the end of this part of the path, Mario reaches the level's Checkpoint.
Past the checkpoint, Mario finds a rotating, checkered, circular platform with a Question Block in the center. Upon hitting the block, five Boos appear, however, the contents of the block – a Power Star – appears as well. An oddly-shaped platform, similar to that of the one near the beginning of the level, is what Mario must ride for the duration of the level. A Big Boo appears half-way through Mario's adventure aboard this platform. Upon reaching the wall, the platform quickly falls down, leading Mario to the doorway leading outside where the Flagpole can be found.
Enemies that appeared in World 8-4:
- Star Medal 1: Upon landing on the green arrow platform, Mario finds the first Star Medal, but must chase it down while aboard the platform.
- Star Medal 2: The second Star Medal is found on the large rotating platform just past the checkpoint of the level.
- Star Medal 3: The third Star Medal is blatantly found aboard the moving platform past the checkpoint. It can be obtained by staying on the left side right before the appearance of the Big Boo.
