Wooden cutouts, also named Boards, are a recurring object in the Mario franchise. They first appear in Super Mario 3D Land.
Description[]
Wooden cutouts are wooden objects that depict a certain object or enemy.
In Super Mario series[]
Super Mario 3D Land[]
Boards, as they are named in the game, are designed after either a Goomba, a 1-Up Mushroom, or a Warp Pipe, specifically named Goomba Boards, 1-Up Mushroom Boards, and Pipe Boards respectively. Boards are minor obstructions within a path, but it can be jumped on or broken using either Tanooki Mario's tail, a roll, or a Ground Pound. A board sometimes releases an item upon breaking.
In World 8-Bowser: Part 1, a board shaped like Princess Peach appears at the the exit of the castle after Bowser is defeated a first time, but Bowser shows up and crushes the board. If the player replays the level, only some fragments are there.
Super Mario 3D World / Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury[]
A board shaped like Bowser appears in the level, Shadow-Play Alley, which scares Captain Toad. The player's character has to touch the Bowser board so that it falls and breaks, and by doing so, they are rewarded a Green Star from Captain Toad. Another Bowser board appears in Trouble in Shadow-Play Alley, blocking the path of the player's character.
In Mario Kart series[]
Mario Kart 7[]
Several Goomba Boards and bush boards appear in the track Piranha Plant Slide. A driver can break a board by driving into it, although this slows them in the process. One of the bush boards stands between the fences in an off-road area at the end of the course.
Mario Kart 8 / Mario Kart 8 Deluxe[]
Goomba Boards and bush boards return on the classic course 3DS Piranha Plant Slide, functioning identically as in the track's original Mario Kart 7 iteration.
