Wire Traps are a variant of Spark and a recurring enemy in various Mario and Donkey Kong games. Wire Traps first appear in Donkey Kong for the Game Boy.
Profile[]
Physical description[]
Wire Traps have no face and spiked edges. In Donkey Kong for the Game Boy, Wire Traps are circular and possess a spike on each diagonal end. In Super Mario Sunshine, Wire Traps are featured in both red and blue varieties, both having the appearance of spiral-shaped seashells covered in spikes. The blue Wire Traps are bigger than the red ones.
Behavior[]
Wire Traps move in a single direction on a tightrope and come out from the other side shortly afterward. In Donkey Kong and Mario vs. Donkey Kong, they do this from left to right before re-emerging from the left side some seconds later.
In Super Mario Sunshine, a Wire Trap travels from the front to back of a tightrope or vice versa, relative to where Mario is standing. As it travels, a Wire Trap spins while emitting glowing sparks of electricity, and makes a low chirping noise akin to a real-world hermit crab's. Red Wire Traps usually grow from a funnel on one side before traveling to the other side and disappearing, similar to Wire Traps in Donkey Kong for Game Boy, but in Noki Bay, they actively follow Mario across a tightrope. Blue Wire Traps are slower than red Wire Traps, and they constantly travel back and forth between ends of the rope without disappearing.
In Donkey Kong (Game Boy)[]
Mario first encounters Spike Traps in Stage 1-3 of Big-City. If Mario touches a Wire Trap, he gets electrocuted and loses a life.
In Super Mario Sunshine[]
Red Wire Traps are found in Bianco Hills and Noki Bay, and the blue ones only appear in Noki Bay. If Mario touches a Wire Trap, he gets burned and may fall off the tightrope. Mario can slightly hinder a Wire Trap's movement by spraying water on it using with FLUDD. Mario cannot defeat Wire Traps, and he can only avoid them by jumping over them.
In Mario vs. Donkey Kong[]
Wire Traps travel through a wire every several seconds like in Donkey Kong for Game Boy. Wire Traps are first encountered in Level 1-4.
