Wind is a recurring environmental feature in the Mario franchise. It first appears in Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels.

Description[]

Wind blows around objects. The stronger the wind is, the more it can blow around, including Mario or another character if the wind is that powerful. Stronger winds can serve as a hindrance if it blows in the opposite direction in which the character has to move or if it blows them too far across into a pit or some other obstacle. On the other hand, strong wind can be necessary for a character to travel across large gaps or even to be blown up to higher areas.

Because wind is invisible, some games use certain objects blowing around, such as leaves, to show its effects. In some games, moving wind lines are shown wherever wind is present, especially if no objects are being blown around.

In Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels[]

Wind appears in certain levels such as World A-3, and is represented by leaves blowing around onscreen. Wind is one of the few features that did not previously appear in Super Mario Bros.. Given that Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels features harder challenges in general, the inclusion of wind can be attributed to the difficulty of jumping across very wide gaps, with some even being wide enough that Mario or Luigi are required to jump from a Trampoline to get across.

In Mario Golf series[]

Every Mario Golf installment features wind as one of the factors for when aiming the golf ball, something that is also done in real-world golf.

In Mario Party 4[]

Wind is the main and only obstacle in the 2-vs.-2 minigame Cliffhangers, in which two teams compete to climb up a mountain. At first, when the wind appears, the snowfall is blown slightly, but a brief strong wind storm is likely to follow. Regardless, the light wind serves as a warning for a team to stop moving and grasp on to where they are, as the ensuing strong wind can blow the characters slightly down the mountain if they are moving.

In Mario & Sonic series[]

The various Archery events throughout the Mario & Sonic series feature wind as a factor for determining the aim of an arrow to the bullseye.

In WarioWare series[]

Wind, particularly from The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, appears in the The Wind Waker microgame in both WarioWare: Smooth Moves and WarioWare Gold. Here, as Link is holding out his Deku Leaf, he must use the wind to guide himself over to a platform to land onto.
