Super Mario

White Tanooki Mario is a power-up in the Super Mario series. It first appears in Super Mario 3D Land.

Description[]

White Tanooki Mario is the invincibility counterpart of Tanooki Mario. Whoever has undergone their White Tanooki form has a similar appearance as when wearing a Tanooki Suit, except it is white and yellow and sparkling. White Tanooki Mario retains the same abilities as Tanooki Mario, except it makes the character glide a little longer. Touching most enemies instantly defeats them.

While White Tanooki Mario does not appear in New Super Mario Bros. 2, a form based on it appears, White Raccoon Mario, although it is the invincibility counterpart of Raccoon Mario.

Super Mario 3D Land was the first game to introduce White Tanooki Mario. If Mario were to fail a level 5 times in a row, the game spawns an Assist Block, and hitting it spawns an Invincibility Leaf, which will transform Mario into White Tanooki Mario upon touching it.

In his White Tanooki form, Mario or Luigi is invulnerable to all enemies and obstacles, except for falling into lava, falling behind an auto-scrolling screen, time running out, or being crushed by an object.

The power-up cannot be obtained in any of the special worlds nor will it appear in levels you have already cleared. Because of this, Luigi cannot obtain an Invincibility Leaf unless the player skips a level in a normal world (for example, by using a Warp Zone (these can be found in World 1-2 and World 4-2)), or skips one of the optional locked levels (which require Star Medals to unlock) in the first eight worlds.

If using the White Tanooki form, let alone having an Assist Block appear in any normal world level, then the completion stars on their save file will not sparkle. The Assist Block vanishes if Mario or Luigi completes the level without using the form.

Super Mario 3D World / Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury[]

White Tanooki Mario makes a reappearance, acting similarly as in Super Mario 3D Land. Once again, using White Tanooki Mario will cause the completion stars on the player's save file to lose their shine and the score of the level where the form was used will remain at zero. However, unlike Super Mario 3D Land, the stars' shine can be restored by replaying the level without using the form, as well as saving the level's score. In the Nintendo Switch version, using the form's Super Bell equivalent, White Cat Mario, has not effect on the shine of the save file stars.

In the Bowser's Fury, the invincibility properties of White Tanooki Mario does not protect Mario from the black goop spread around Lake Lapcat.
