Welcome Back to Yoshi's Island! is the starting tutorial level of Yoshi's Island DS. It is both based on and similar to Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island's tutorial level Welcome To Yoshi's Island. The only enemy here is one Red Shy Guy. Like its predecessor, Welcome Back to Yoshi's Island! cannot be revisited once it has been completed, and therefore, Baby Mario, being the first baby to ride on the Yoshis, is the only one who can appear in the level.

Welcome Back to Yoshi's Island! is the shortest level. It starts with a pop-up window explaining how if a Yoshi takes damage from an enemy, the Countdown Timer is triggered and that he must retrieve the baby before Kamek's Toadies arrive to steal him. The dialogue lastly states that once Yoshi has retrieved the baby, the Countdown Timer slowly counts back up to zero. Following right after the pop-up window is a red Shy Guy, and while it can be easily skipped by jumping over it, the red Shy Guy was placed there possibly to correspond to the pop-up window so that the player can see the result themselves.
After the Shy Guy is an Expansion Block and two pairs of coins placed above it horizontally. After this, Yoshi has to jump from one pointed rock platform to the next. There is another pair of rocks following this, but getting across requires Yoshi to perform a Flutter Jump. Both jumps have an arc of a few coins between them.
After the second jump is a small Spring Ball that Yoshi can jump on to reach a higher cliff, followed by a large Spring Ball that Yoshi can bounce from to get onto to an even higher cliff. On top of this is an arrow sign, and walking past it ends the level.
