A Warp Cannon can be entered by Mario or another playable character to be launched to a specific later world, although sometimes, for two worlds in a row, a Warp Cannon leads to the same later world. A Warp Cannon is found within its own location that only becomes accessible on the world map by taking a secret exit via the Red Flagpole in a specific level. The sound effect for entering a Warp Pipe plays whenever the player's character enters a Warp Pipe.
In New Super Mario Bros. 2, a Warp Cannon is colored blue instead of black. Instead of shooting Mario or Luigi directly to a later world, the Warp Cannon shoots them out straightforward to the right to have them forcefully dash their way through a short, straightforward level.
