Wario Land II (also referred to as Wario Land 2) is a 2-D platformer starring Wario for the Game Boy and the Game Boy Color. It was originally made for the Game Boy in March 1998. It was later made on the Nintendo 3DS Virtual Console. It is also the second game of the Wario Land series, following after Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3.

Story[]

Black Sugar Gang in WLII GBC

The Sugar Pirates infiltrating Wario Castle

The story begins at Wario Castle, where Wario is taking a nap on his bed. However, three Pirate Gooms, grunts of the Black Sugar Gang, approach the castle from outside, infiltrate the building, and steal Wario's treasures. The pirates try to obstruct Wario by turning on a giant faucet and installing an oversized alarm clock. After this, the pirates escape and leave Wario, who is eventually awoken by the alarm clock, and he sets off to pursue the thieves.

In one part of his journey, Wario learns that the pirates have scared off his pet hen, which he rescues before continuing his pursuit of the Black Sugar Gang. Wario manages to get to the pirate's ship before they can set off. He drops the anchor, forcing the ship to a help, although he is then stopped by the ship guard Bobo, who delays his progress so the pirates can escape via a hot-air balloon. Wario chases them through the overgrown jungle of Maze Woods and a city.

Wario eventually reaches the Black Sugar Gang's hideout at Syrup Castle. Here, after battling many of the pirate grunts, Wario confronts the pirate leader herself, Captain Syrup, whom he manages to defeat and demolishes her aircraft. Wario blasts the pirates out of their fortress, reclaims his treasures and returns home to resume his nap.

There are alternate pathways and alternate endings, although they mainly end with Wario safely back at his castle and his treasures returned. Eventually in the true final chapter (which contains a Time Attack feature), Wario returns to Syrup Castle and proceeds to a mountain range somewhere near the building. There he discovers a secret cave in which the pirates store their treasures. In a final raid, Wario overcomes the difficulties in the pirate cave and plunders Syrup's riches. He then returns home for the final time, but not without the Giant Spear Man following him closely.

Gameplay[]

Turn off the giant faucet

Wario in the first chapter's second story, Turn off the giant faucet!

Wario Land II is a 2D platforming game like its predecessor, Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3. It is divided into five worlds, which the game calls chapters, each divided into five respective Levels, which the game calls stories. The chapters are accessed one after another, so when the player completes a level, they will be instantly transported to the next level. After completing the game for the first time, the player will receive a Treasure Map that allows them to choose the level they visit at will.

Throughout the levels, the player can discover many secret exits which lead to five additional Chapters. Five different endings can be unlocked in this way, not counting the real ending that is accessed after completing the unlockable Time Attack level.

Wario's basic abilities include walking, crouching, entering doors with the +Control Pad, jumping using the A Button Button, and performing his Dash Attack by pressing the B Button Button. Pressing the +Control Pad while jumping causes Wario to jump slightly higher, a technique that can be used while jumping on an enemy to jump even higher. When standing on a slope, pressing down causes Wario to perform a rolling attack, allowing him to smash blocks and defeat enemies.

Unlike earlier, Wario can now use a Ground Pound to create shockwaves even without the use of a Viking helmet, which can reverse enemies' movement and defeat them. When Wario stuns an enemy by jumping on it, he can pick up them up and carry them around. Wario's speed will decrease while he is carrying a heavy foe (e.g. a Grunt, or a D.D.). A carried enemy can defeat other enemies by throwing it on them. Wario's throw can now be powered up by pressing and holding the B Button Button, increasing Wario's throwing distance and instantly defeating the tossed enemy if it hits an obstacle.

A key feature of Wario Land II and a difference from previous Wario Land games is Wario's inability to lose a life. Rather, being hit by an enemy only knocks Wario backwards briefly and causes him to lose some coins. Additionally, some enemies cause Wario to assume new forms that the player can use to progress through the level. While eleven conditions (later renamed "reactions") can be used to gain advantages, they may sometimes act as a hindrance, depending on the situation. Most conditions are curable if Wario touches a body of water, but some only wear off after a certain amount of time has passed.
