Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3 (ワリオランド: スーパーマリオランド3 Wariorando: Sūpāmariorando 3?) is a game released by Nintendo in 1994 for the Game Boy. It takes place after the events after Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins, but is the first game in the Wario Land series, let alone the Wario franchise in general. Years later, it was released for the Nintendo 3DS's Virtual Console in 2011 in Japan and in 2012 in North America, Europe, and Australia.
Despite having Super Mario in the title, Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3 is not a part of the Super Mario series, similarly to how Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island is the first Yoshi's Island game and not a sequel to Super Mario World. It is possible that Super Mario was added into the title to promote the respective Wario and Yoshi franchises, much like how The Final Fantasy Legend and its two sequels only had Final Fantasy in its title for marketing-related purposes.
Story[]
The story takes place after the events of Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins. Wario wants to replace or restore the castle he lost to Mario by stealing a golden statue of Princess Toadstool from the Brown Sugar Pirates and Captain Syrup, which he then intends to ransom for the money to buy his own castle. During his journey, Wario collects or steals coins and treasures he finds or knocks out of enemies. Wario navigates a number of levels to reclaim his lost treasures.
In the end, Captain Syrup is defeated, and Mario airlifts the Princess Toadstool status. The Genie gives Wario a new home ranging anywhere from a birdhouse to an actual planet or moon, depending on how much treasure Wario collected, as compensation for Wario failing to steal the statue.
Endings[]
The ending is determined by how many coins Wario has collected by the end, and higher ranges of coins grant Wario a better home. If Wario does not complete the game with the best ending, the words "Please retry!" are shown after the credits, and any levels with missing treasures will be marked flashing on the map.

Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3 is a 2D platforming game starring Wario as a playable character. There are seven worlds, each divided into multiple levels. In most levels, Wario has to trade in ten of his coins for a big 10 Gold Coin to open the door to the next level. Once a level is completed, the next one becomes available, and so forth. Wario can use the map to revisit levels that he has already completed.
Similarly to the Super Mario series, there are power-ups that Wario can use to become more powerful. Wario can also touch enemies as long as they are not equipped with a weapon or any hazard. As such, Wario can either stun or defeat several enemies from either a Body Slam, ground pound, touching its vulnerable spot, or throwing the enemy at another one.
Forms[]
- Bull Wario: gained by picking up a Bull Pot. In this form, Wario can easily destroy enemies and blocks. He can also create shock waves by slamming to the ground with his weight and cling to the celling.
- Dragon Wario: gained by picking up a Dragon Pot. With a dragon-like helmet on his head, Wario can shoot fire from it. If used underwater, he'll instead fire arrow-like projectiles. Unlike the other forms, Wario cannot do a Body Slam.
- Jet Wario: gained by picking up a Jet Pot. Upon wearing a plane-like helmet, Wario can glide for a short time before touching the ground. He also moves quickly and jumps higher.
- Small Wario: like Small Mario from the Super Mario series, Wario turns into this form if he takes damage. Should he take a hit while small, he loses one life. Small Wario can turn into regular Wario if he finds a pot, or finishes the level.
