Wario's Woods (ワリオの森 Wario no Mori) is a puzzle game made by Nintendo for the Nintendo Entertainment System. It was later re-released for WiiWare. This game played very similarly to Tetris with the enemies in the game being able to be defeated by placing bombs over them. In this game, Toad is the main character and he has to prevent Wario from taking over the Mushroom Kingdom.

The game was first reissued as a furniture item in Animal Crossing and then ported to the Wii as a Virtual Console title.

Plot[]

In this game, Toad rescues the entire Mushroom Kingdom from the wrath of Wario (who is attempting to take over these lands). Throughout the adventure, Toad is helped by his two allies Birdo and Wanda. With their help, Toad uses his superhuman strength to clear his path to Wario by eliminating his minions (through the use of bombs). Throughout the game, Toad is constantly insulted and put down by Wario. Despite this, Toad still completes his duty as the Mushroom Kingdom Hero by defeating Wario and his minions, and lifting the spell off the wooded areas that Wario began his capture of the Kingdom. In the ending, Toad chases Wario out of the woods.

Gameplay[]

Wario's Woods plays similarly to drop-down puzzle games. Toad is the playable character, and Birdo and a Sprite help Toad by giving him encouragement and bombs to destroy the monsters, respectively. If Toad takes too long to complete a level, Wario replaces Birdo and turns the Sprite into a Pidgit, which throws more monsters at Toad, as well as bombs. Wario occasionally performs a body slam attack on the side of his box to make the Thwomp ceiling descend, although destroying enemies causes the ceiling to rise back upward. The game features several unique enemies, as well as several mini-bosses who try to block Toad from getting to Wario.

In the ending, Wario himself appears to fight against Toad alone, although Wario is very big. However, Toad manages to defeat Wario, causing him to shrink back to his original size and reducing his powers. It is further revealed that Wario used an air pump to inflate himself to a much bigger size to battle Toad. Toad then proceeds onward by chasing Wario out of the woods.

Trivia[]

  • This is the second game where Wario is the main antagonist in. The first being in Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins.
  • This is the first game where Toad is the solo main protagonist in.
  • This is the last Nintendo Entertainment System game and the only one to have received an ESRB rating.
