Vegetables are a somewhat recurring item in the Mario franchise. They first appear in Yume Kōjō: Doki Doki Panic and its Western conversion Super Mario Bros. 2.
In the Super Mario series[]
Super Mario Bros. 2[]
Vegetables are grown throughout Subcon. There are two varieties of vegetable; ripe and unripe. Mario or another playable character can pluck either type of vegetable from the ground from its leaves if the player presses when the playable character stands at one. The character can then throw the Vegetable, and use it to attack enemies. The difference with ripe vegetables is that they are considerably larger, but are still just as effective when thrown. If five ripe Vegetables are pulled out consecutively, a Stop Watch is pulled out as well, temporarily freezing all enemies onscreen.
During Wart's boss fight, Vegetables are released from the Dream Machine, and the playable character can attack Wart by throwing Vegetables at him. Tomatoes and onions are two types of Vegetables only seen during the boss fight against Wart, but they function the same as other Vegetables. Wart is said to hate Vegetables, which is a reason why they are an effective way to attack him. After throwing six vegetables in Wart's mouth (four in Yume Kōjō: Doki Doki Panic), he gets defeated.
Super Mario Advance 4: Super Mario Bros. 3[]
Using the e-Cards, vegetables can be brought into the game by activating the Blue Green Switch.
In Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker[]
Vegetables can be plucked out of the ground by Captain Toad or Toadette and thrown at enemies. This is one of the only ways to defeat enemies in the game.
In the Super Smash Bros. series[]
Vegetable[note 1] is Peach and Daisy's down special, used as a projectile. Peach/Daisy picks up a vegetable when on ground and tosses it to an opponent, different items deal damage. All of their vegetables varies expressions, indicating to a separate amount of inflicted damage (the one with stitches on its mouth will cause a respectable 36% damage). Peach and Daisy may pick up Mr. Saturn or a Bob-omb.
Prior to Patch 3.0.0 in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Daisy's turnips deal high base knockback but low knockback.[1] Peach's turnips deal high knockback but low base knockback.[1]
In other media[]
The Super Mario Bros. Super Show![]
Vegetables are used in various episodes to defeat their enemies (the Koopa Pack and King Koopa) in a similar manner to Super Mario Bros. 2. The vegetable throwing sound is also recycled for this and other things such as the launching of a Bullet Bill and the launching of a Fireball.
Mario vs. Wario[]
The comic's first page illustrated Mario and Wario's childhood. There were numerous vegetables in the background, and Wario picked a vegetable like how they function in Super Mario Bros. 2. Wario recalled Mario asking to pick vegetables in the garden. Mario picked turnips and Wario picked piranha flowers.
