When I first looked this topic up online, I found barely anything that discusses it in detail. A few months later, when I was well into my own journey for a near-perfect glitchless save file, I decided to go to the Super Mario Wiki and create my own blog post about this interesting topic and goal in the game that is Mario and Luigi:Superstar Saga. So, without further ado, here is my blog post on perfect save files in Mario and Luigi:Superstar Saga.

What is a perfect save file?[]

A perfect save file is a save file in which absolutely everything is maximised to the highest number obtainable. It appears most in RPGs, with things such as maximum items and statistics being a large part of this.

List of things needed for a perfect save file in Mario and Luigi:Superstar Saga[]

To my understanding, the requirements needed to be considered a perfect save file are:

999 on every stat for both Mario and Luigi
99 of every item
9 of every piece of clothing and badge(Except for Casual Coral, Harhall's Pants, Iron Pants, Wool Trousers, Work Jeans, Work Pants, Bean Badge, Bros. Rock, High-End Badge and Soulful Bros. as they can only be obtained once)
99 of every bean
99 of every coffee
Level 99 for both Mario and Luigi
999,999 xp for both Mario and Luigi
9999 coins
Every sidequest done
Every Advanced Bros. Technique
Every boss beaten
99:59 total time played

How hard is it?[]

The whole thing will take hundreds of hours of grinding, maybe over a thousand hours. This is most certainly not for everyone.

999 on every stat for both Mario and Luigi[]

How hard:Very hard
How much time:A few hundred hours
How to do it:Grind Woo and Hee Beans, trade them for Teeheespressos at the Starbeans Cafe and drink a coffee to add 6 to a random stat. Additionally, you can improve stats by leveling, but there is a level cap and you simply cannot get enough from leveling to get to 999 on every stat.

99 of every item[]

How hard:Easy
How much time:Mostly done during other objectives
How to do it:Most items can be bought at the shop for coins which you will get during other objectives, especially during level grinding. Red and Green Peppers can be got by defeating Bob-Ombs and Tanoombas respectively with a Game Boy Horror SP equipped. Golden Mushrooms are a problem, as only 5 can be gotten during normal play. However, there is a glitch called deathwarping that can get you to 99 Golden Mushrooms.

9 of every piece of clothing and badge(Except for Casual Coral, Harhall's Pants, Iron Pants, Wool Trousers, Work Jeans, Work Pants, Bean Badge, Bros. Rock, High-End Badge and Soulful Bros. as they can only be obtained once)[]

How hard:Moderate
How much time:Mostly done during other objectives
How to do it:Most clothing and badges can be bought at the shop for coins which you will get during other objectives, especially during level grinding. Ancient Pants, Anuboo Jeans, Bubbles's Gear, Oho Jee Wear, Random Slacks, School Slacks, Smart Pants, Chuckola Badge, Hand Aura, Oho Jee Symbol, School Emblem and Steady Badge can be obtained from Limbo Bros., Anuboos, Fuzzbushes, Oho Jees, Boos, Eekers, Eekers(not an accident, both School Slacks and Smart Pants can be gotten from Eekers), Gold Beanies, Starkisses, Oho Jees, Mecha-Chomps and Yellow Viruses respectively. Piranha Suit, Bowser Fist, Bowser Fang, Lucky Bros., Lucky Ribbon, Piranha Swing, Sledge Heart and Spiny Badge A are only obtainable once since they come from Piranha Bean, Morton, Roy, Trunkle, Hermie III, Piranha Bean, Jojora's Friend and Mom Piranha which are all bosses. Thankfully, a glitched called deathwarping can get you 9 of each of these. Casual Coral, Harhall's Pants, Iron Pants, Wool Trousers, Work Jeans, Work Pants, Bean Badge, Bros. Rock, High-End Badge and Soulful Bros. can only be obtained once. Casual Coral comes from getting under 39 second in the surfing minigame for the first time. Harhall's Pants comes from getting every design in Harhall's Studio. Work Jeans, Work Pants and Bean Badge are unlocked automatically as you progress. Iron Pants, Wool Trousers, Bros. Rock, High-End Badge and Soulful Bros. come from sidequests.

99 of every bean[]

How hard:Easy
How much time:A couple of hours
How to do it:Woo Beans are obtained from the surfing minigame and dropped by Lakipeas, Sharpeas, Pestnuts and Beanies, Hee Beans are obtained from every minigame that isn't the surfing minigame, Chuckle Beans are obtained from underground X marks and the surfing minigame and Hoo Beans are obtained from hidden blocks and the surfing minigame.

99 of every coffee[]

How hard:Extremely hard
How much time:Quite a few hundred hours
How to do it:Trade a certain number of beans for one of these. In order of easiest and hardest to get they go Teeheespresso, Woohoo Blend, Teehee Blend, Chuckoccino, Hoolumbian Blend, Chuckle Blend and Hoohoo Blend. These are the hardest things to max in the game.

Level 99 for both Mario and Luigi[]

How hard:Hard
How much time:A few tens of hours
How to do it:Grind enemies for XP in Bowser's Castle or Joke's End.

999,999 xp for both Mario and Luigi[]

How hard:Hard
How much time:A few tens of hours
How to do it:Grind enemies for XP in Bowser's Castle or Joke's End.

9999 coins[]

How hard:Easy
How much time:Done during other objectives
How to do it:Coins are accumulated during other objectives, especially when grinding levels.

Every Sidequest Done[]

How hard:Moderate
How much time:A few hours
How to do it:I'll just give you a list of sidequests.
Unlocking all 9 Warp Pipes
Finding every Monty Mole
Finding the Beanlets
FInding the Beanstones
Getting all the E.Gadd equipment
Doing every clothing design for Harhall
Finding both whirlpools
Unlocking every Bros. Attack
Bringing Spangle to Hermie
Helping the Toads and Koopa Troopa in the beginning of the game

Every Advanced Bros. Technique[]

How hard:Moderate
How much time:Done during other objectives
How to do it:Use each Bros. Attack enough times to unlock the Advanced Command. This is usually done during normal gameplay.

All Bosses beaten[]

How hard:Moderate
How much time:10-20 hours
How to do it:Achieved during normal play. Note that after beating Bowletta and Cackletta's Soul in order to play again you have to go back to the last save before you beat the boss. This means that you need to beat them after you complete every other objective in order to get a perfect save file

99:59 minutes played[]

How hard:Hard
How much time:99 hours 59 minutes, duh
How to do it:Play for 99 hours and 59 minutes. This is easily achived during the harder and longer objectives, such as 99 of each coffee or 999 on every stat.

Other types of perfect save files[]

Glitchless Perfect Save File[]

Same as a perfect save file, except it requires absolutely everything to be at the absolute maximum number possible WITHOUT GLITCHES.

List of things needed for a glitchless perfect save file in Mario and Luigi:Superstar Saga[]

To my understanding, the requirements needed to be considered a glitchless perfect save file are:

999 on every stat for both Mario and Luigi
99 of every item(except Golden Mushrooms as only five of them can be found in-game)
9 of every piece of clothing and badge(Except for Casual Coral, Harhall's Pants, Iron Pants, Wool Trousers, Work Jeans, Work Pants, Bean Badge, Bros. Rock, High-End Badge, Soulful Bros., Bowser Fist, Bowser Fang, Lucky Bros., Lucky Ribbon, Piranha Swing, Sledge Heart and Spiny Badge A as they can only be obtained once)(In addition to this, you can only get either the Piranha Swing or Piranha Suit once and the other can not be obtained)
99 of every bean
99 of every coffee
Level 99 for both Mario and Luigi
999,999 xp for both Mario and Luigi
9999 coins
Every sidequest done
Every Advanced Bros. Technique
Every boss beaten
99:59 total time played

Near Perfect Save File[]

Same as a perfect save file, except one or a few objectives are not done. Usually, the objectives not done are the hardest ones. In Mario and Luigi:Superstar Saga, the hardest objectives are getting 99 of each coffee and getting 999 on every stat.

Glitchless Near Perfect Save File[]

A combination of a near perfect save file and a glitchless save file.

Walkthrough[]

As far as I know(and I have searched for this a LOT), this is the only walkthrough available online for any type of perfect save file in this game. This walkthrough will cover how to get a perfect save file, its glitchless counterpart and various types of near-perfect save files.

Goal 1:Defeat all Bosses[]

  • Start a new game save file(obviously).
  • Make sure to help the two Toads and the Koopa before you go to Beanbean(if you're making sure to do every sidequest). If you miss any of these or tell the Koopa to go in the wrong direction just reset your game file. These sidequests are among the most important to get finished as they are in one of the few areas you cannot come back to.
  • If you are planning to max yout your clothing and badge count, make sure not to sell the following equipment:Casual Coral, Harhall's Pants, Iron Pants, Wool Trousers, Work Jeans, Work Pants, Bean Badge, Bros. Rock, High-End Badge, Soulful Bros., Bowser Fist, Bowser Fang, Lucky Bros., Lucky Ribbon, Piranha Swing, Sledge Heart, Spiny Badge A and Piranha Swing/Suit. In addition to this, do not sell any Golden Mushroom if you are planning to max out your item count and are doing a glitchless perfect save file/are after defeating Fawful at Bowser's Castle. If you somehow do this by accident, go back to your previous save.
  • Progress as normal until you get to the Mom Piranha fight at Beanbean Airport. Get the Spiny Badge A from defeating her or stealing it by using Advanced Swing Bros. on her. If you're not doing a glitchless perfect save file or skipping getting 9 of every piece of equipment (with some exceptions of course), get 9 Spiny Badge As by using the deathwarp glitch. If you do accidentally defeat her, go back to your last save.
  • When you get to the Trunkle fight in Teehee Valley, get the Lucky Bros. badge from defeating him or stealing it by using Advanced Swing Bros. on his body (both of these however do not have a 100% drop rate). If you're not doing a glitchless perfect save file or skipping getting 9 of every piece of equipment (with some exceptions of course), get 9 Lucky Bros. badges by using the deathwarp glitch. If you do accidentally defeat him, go back to your last save.
  • When you get to the Hermie III fight in Gwarhar Lagoon, get the Lucky Ribbon badge from defeating him or stealing it by using Advanced Swing Bros. on him (defeating him however does not have a 100% drop rate). If you're not doing a glitchless perfect save file or skipping getting 9 of every piece of equipment (with some exceptions of course), get 9 Lucky Ribbon badges by using the deathwarp glitch. If you do accidentally defeat hi,, go back to your last save.
If you do accidentally defeat him, go back to your last save.
  • Although this is not required, you can brew every type of coffee at Starbeans Café at least once to get the Game Boy Horror SP before the Piranha Bean fight in order to get the Piranha Suit, which is considered a better reward than the Piranha Swing you get if you don't equip the Game Boy Horror SP. You cannot deathwarp during this fight as you do this as Luigi on his own, who cannot perform Advanced Swing Bros. However, the Game Boy Horror SP is required soon in the game if you want every piece of equipment.
  • BEFORE triggering the cutscene with Fawful in Joke's End, MAKE SURE to do the Beanlet and Beanstone sidequests in Castle Town(if you're making sure to do every sidequest) as these sidequests become inaccessible after this cutscene starts.
  • When you get to the Jojora(and friend) fight in Joke's End, get the Sledge Heart badge from equipping the Game Boy Horror SP and defeating her or stealing it by using Advanced Swing Bros. on her friend (defeating her however does not have a 100% drop rate). If you're not doing a glitchless perfect save file or skipping getting 9 of every piece of equipment (with some exceptions of course), get 9 Sledge Heart badges by using the deathwarp glitch. If you do accidentally defeat her, go back to your last save.
  • When you get to the Popple and Birdo fight in Teehee Valley, get a Golden Mushroom from equipping the Game Boy Horror SP and defeating them or stealing it by using Advanced Swing Bros. on Birdo (both however do not have a 100% drop rate). This is optional unless you're doing a glitchless perfect save file that includes getting 99 of each item(with an exception).
  • When you get to the Morton Koopa Jr. fight in Bowser's Castle, get the Bowser Fist badge from equipping the Game Boy Horror SP and defeating him or stealing it by using Advanced Swing Bros. on him (using Advanced Swing Bros. on him however does not have a 100% drop rate). If you're not doing a glitchless perfect save file or skipping getting 9 of every piece of equipment (with some exceptions of course), get 9 Bowser Fist badges by using the deathwarp glitch. If you do accidentally defeat him, go back to your last save.
  • When you get to the Roy Koopa fight in Bowser's Castle, get the Bowser Fang badge from equipping the Game Boy Horror SP and defeating him or stealing it by using Advanced Swing Bros. on him (using Advanced Swing Bros. on him however does not have a 100% drop rate). If you're not doing a glitchless perfect save file or skipping getting 9 of every piece of equipment (with some exceptions of course), get 9 Bowser Fang badges by using the deathwarp glitch. If you do accidentally defeat him, go back to your last save.
  • When you get to the Fawful fight in Bowser's Castle, get a Golden Mushroom from unequipping the Game Boy Horror SP and defeating him or stealing it by using Advanced Swing Bros. on him (both however do not have a 100% drop rate). If you're not doing a glitchless perfect save file or skipping getting 99 of every item, get 99 Golden Mushrooms by using the deathwarp glitch. If you do accidentally defeat him, go back to your last save.
  • DO NOT fight Bowletta unless you just want to complete the game normally without any of the objectives below. This is because after defeating Bowletta, the file, when opened again, starts back at the time you saved before fighting Bowletta.

Goal 2:All Sidequests Done[]

  • The first sidequest is one you may have at least partly done already, that being finding all 9 warp pipes. Four of them are in Castle Town and its surrounding area, one is in Stardust Fields, one is in Chucklehuck Woods, one is in Little Fungitown, one is in Gwarhar Lagoon and one is in Joke's End. For the last five, they are all in the beginning of their respective areas so they are not hard to find. Castle Town's warp pipes are a bit harder to find however, except 3 which is found in the Pipe House.
  • Also in Castle Town(if you have not done this already), brew all the Starbeans coffees at least once to get all the equipment from E.Gadd.
  • If you haven't done so already, go to the Hammerhead Bros. in Castle Town's surrounding area and play the Thwomp minigames to the right of the main room to unlock two Secret Scrolls which give you two extra Bros. Attacks.
  • Also in the surrounding area, go back to Harhall the fashion designer. The sidequest here is creating every possible design for him.
  • A sidequest that takes place in the water is the whirlpool sidequest, which involves finding two whirlpools. One is to the west of the surfing minigame and the other is northwest from Oho Oasis.
  • At Gwarhar Lagoon, Hermie III tasks you with finding something to decorate his shell. Nearby is Spangle, who wants somewhere high up to perform. Bring Spangle to Hermie to finish this sidequest.
  • The last and most tedious sidequest of all is finding the many Monty Moles scattered throughout the game. They are located:in a cave in Hoohoo Mountain, in three caves in the surrounding area of Castle Town(two Monty Moles are in the same cave), in the plant section of Castle Town's surrounding area, above the Hoohoo/Castle Town border, in an area reached through a whirlpool, in Joke's End and in Bowser's Castle. This totals up to 10 Monty Moles. Two of these give Golden Mushrooms, which are important for maxing out your item count in a glitchless perfect save file.
  • Use each Bros. Attack as much as possible until you get its Advanced form. Make sure to get all the Advanced forms.

Goal 3:Level 99 and 999,999 XP[]

  • This goal includes many other goals which are also required for a perfect save file
  • Okay, so the best way to grind XP is to equip the Bonus Ring(which doubles the XP you gain from battles if you take no damage) and kill enemies in Joke's End/Bowser's Castle. To respawn the enemies, enter any shop and buy/sell something.
  • This is a good way to get items as well, as with the Greed Wallet equipped, you can get a lot of coins fast, which can be used to buy items in the shop. You should be able to reach 99 of every buyable item(the only exceptions are Red and Green Peppers, which can be easily gotten by defeating enemies and Golden Mushrooms, which you should already have 99 of (or 5 in a glitchless run)
  • If you've gotten 99 of every buyable item, start buying 9 of every buyable piece of clothing and badge(Make sure to get everything from both Castle Town and Little Fungitown's shops)
  • After that you can get is 9999 coins, as after buying all the items, clothes and badges coins don't have much use
  • While leveling, make sure to use Bros. Attacks on enemies to unlock their advanced forms. Once you have them all, you can go back to using normal attacks.
  • If you want proof for when you later (possibly) get max stats, only level up to 95 as you will likely level up a few times during grinding for max stats. The level up screen is the only time where all your stats are shown for one brother without equipment, so it's the only valid way of showing proof of max stats.
  • You may also get your timer to 99:59 during this but if not don't worry, the last two goals should take care of that

Goal 4:Getting 9 of every piece of clothing+badges(with some exceptions) and getting 99 of every item[]

  • You should already have all the buyable clothes, items and badges from Castle Town and Little Fungitown due to getting coins from levelling but if not you can easily get coins from defeating Tanoombas with the Game Boy Horror SP, getting Green Peppers and then selling them
  • You should already have 99 golden mushrooms unless you're doing a glitchless file(in which case you should have 5)
  • You should already have all the one-chance items from bosses/sidequests and if you're not doing a glitchless save file you should have 9 of all the ones from bosses
  • The remaining items you might not have are Red Peppers and Green Peppers. These cannot be bought in the shop but can easily be gotten by defeating Bob-ombs and Tanoombas respectively (with the Game Boy Horror SP equipped)
  • Key items are not relevant to any type of perfect save files, they only exist for the main story and besides, it's impossible to have them all at the same time anyway
  • The rest of the clothing and badges can be gotten from defeating enemies (mostly with the Game Boy Horror SP equipped)
  • HOWEVER, one badge, the School Emblem, can only be obtained from malfunctioned Mecha-Chomps. To malfunction a Mecha-Chomp, you have to attack it without killing it. Once your power stat goes high enough, this becomes impossible. This is why this should be done before maxing out your stats.
  • Make sure to get back to 9999 coins, as coins are not used after this

Goal 5: Getting 999 on every stat[]

  • This is where getting a perfect save really gets tedious
  • The best way to get your stats up is by drinking Teeheespressos. Teeheespressos are the only coffee that adds 6 to a stat and they are also the only coffee that adds to any stat instead of a specific stat. They are also 'fast' to get, as you only need Woo and Hee beans, the only two types of bean you are able to get without playing the surfing game (which is very slow)
  • The fastest way to get Woo Beans is from defeating the Sharpeas dropped by the Lakipea east of Castle Town with the Game Boy Horror SP equipped. I reccomend getting 90 Woo Beans at a time.
  • The two fastest ways to get Hee Beans are in the Border Jump(located in Stardust Fields) and Star 'Stache Smash(located in Little Fungitown) minigames. I personally prefer Star 'Stache Smash but some people say that Border Jump Sunshine is also very efficient. I reccomend getting 60 Hee Beans at a time.
  • When you have gotten enough Woo and Hee Beans, go to the Starbeans Café and brew as many Teeheespressos as you can. The maximum you can brew in one visit is 6 (90 Woo Beans and 60 Hee Beans), as you can only carry up to 99 of each bean. This is why I reccomended getting Woo Beans in batches of 90 and Hee Beans in batches of 60.
  • Make sure to drink them.
  • It takes about 1600 Teeheespressos and a few hundred hours, but it is possible to max out your stats.

Goal 6:Getting 99 of each coffee[]

  • This is the longest task in the game, even longer than getting 999 on every stat
  • If you haven't already, make sure that you have reached level 99 and 999,999 XP. Don't forget to screenshot the level up screen if you want proof of your max stats.
  • Okay, now it's time for the large task. Make sure not to drink any of the coffees.
  • You should farm Woo Beans and Hee Beans in the same way that you did for max stats.
  • You are able to get 99 of three coffees (Woohoo Blend, Teehee Blend and Teeheespresso) with just Woo Beans and Hee Beans.
  • Hoo Beans and Chuckle Beans can be farmed at the surfing minigame. While it is slow, it is the only way to get an infinite supply. You might get the occasional Woo Bean from time to time.
  • First I reccomend farming for the 99 Hoolumbians and the 99 Chuckoccinos at the same time in the surfing game, while also getting Woo Beans as you have done before.
  • Then finish off by farming beans to get 99 of the two longest coffees to grind:the Hoohoo Blend and Chuckle Blend.
  • After getting 99 of each coffee, make sure to get 99 of each bean as well. It should only take a few hours. Make sure you have 9999 coins at the end of this as well.
  • Congratulations! By following this guide, you have one of the very few perfect save files of Mario and Luigi:Superstar Saga!

My own personal journey[]

I also have my own game log describing my journey to getting a near-perfect glitchless save file which only skips one objective. It contains many details and tips on how to do it efficiently. Link:http://le-miiverse-resource.wikia.com/wiki/User_blog:Port1967/Mario_and_Luigi:Superstar_Saga_Game_Log
