Mario Party

An Unlucky Space is a recurring type of space in the Mario Party series. It first appears in Mario Party 9.

Description[]

When a character lands on an Unlucky Space, they are penalized with a negative event, the exacts of which differ between the Mario Party games. They are functionally the opposite of Lucky Spaces, similarly to how Mini Ztar Spaces function the opposite of Mini Star Spaces.

In Mario Party series[]

Mario Party 9[]

Unlucky Space MP9

An Unlucky Space is typically located next to a red Warp Pipe. If landed on, an Unlucky Space a Piranha Plant appears from the Red Pipe and grabs the Captain, forcing them down into it. The Captain ends up in a cavern with six Mini Ztar Spaces, where they have to roll a standard Dice Block and move onto that many number of Mini Ztar Spaces. Rolling higher numbers can lead to a Mini Ztar Space with a higher number printed on it, therefore causing the Captain to lose more Mini Stars. After that, the Captain exits to the main board, and their turn concludes.

Unlucky Spaces are less common than Lucky Spaces, and they only appear in three boards: Toad Road, Bob-omb Factory and Blooper Beach. There is only one Unlucky Space in Toad Road, while Bob-omb Factory and Blooper Beach have their Unlucky Spaces on branching paths that the captain either can or cannot avoid.

Blooper Beach, has two consecutive Unlucky Spaces just before the last fork of the board, and landing on either of them has a different effect of the nearby Blooper statue activating and creating a whirlpool, which draws the vehicle and the characters to a path around it consisting of Mini Ztar Spaces and Dash Spaces. The Captain who landed on the Unlucky Space also loses three Mini Stars. The characters take turns getting out of the path to avoid losing several Mini Stars while the Blooper statue drags the vehicle two spaces back at the end of each character's turn.

Mario Party: Island Tour[]

The game only has one Unlucky Space, found right in the path of a sleeping Chain Chomp in Perilous Palace Path. If a character lands on the Unlucky Space, the Chain Chomp wakes up and chases any characters in its path up to six spaces back.

Mario Party 10[]

If a character lands on an Unlucky Space, they usually just lose Mini Stars. However, a different negative effect can occur, such as in Whimsical Waters, where a Blooper may ink a character, who can then not use any Special Dice Blocks the next turn.
