Not to be confused with Unagi the Eel, a character representative of its species.

Unagi is an eel species featured in the Mario franchise. They first appear in Super Mario 64. Unagi are commonly seen swimming through oceans and seas and other times are seen resting in their holes biting those who come near, While they do appear flimsy, it is impossible to defeat a Unagi as they are resistant to all attacks and therefore must be avoided.

Related species to Unagis include Gringills, Spike Eels, and Maw-Rays.

Physical description[]

Unagis are maroonish red-violet with yellow stripes on their back fin.

In Super Mario series[]

Super Mario 64 / Super Mario 64 DS[]

A Unagi named Unagi the Eel, appears in Super Mario 64 and its remake Super Mario 64 DS. Unagi is found initially in Jolly Roger Bay, the third level of Super Mario 64 and it's remake. it is needed to obtain two stars from Jolly Roger Bay.

He is first seen resting inside the sunken ship in Jolly Roger Bay. When Mario approaches him, he swims out of the ship allowing Mario to access and get the Power Star inside.

In the next mission Unagi is seen residing in a hole on the ocean wall, Mario can lure him out by going near. The Star is on Unagi's tail. Mario can get it by making contact with the Star.

In later missions, Unagi simply circles the drop off.

Touching Unagi will deduct health of Mario's HP.

New Super Mario Bros.[]

Unagis

Several Unagis found in World 8-3.

They later appear in New Super Mario Bros. in underwater levels as regular enemies. They are found in 4-3 and World 8-3. They mainly attack by poking their heads out of the holes they're resting in and trying to bite Mario (or Luigi). Some also swim along the path. Unagi cannot be defeated, not even with a Mega Mushroom or a Starman. There is also a larger version called the Mega Unagi.

Super Mario Odyssey[]

Although Unagis don't appear in Super Mario Odyssey, a similar variation called the Maw-Ray does. They attack by swimming out of holes.

In Mario Kart series[]

Mario Kart Wii[]

Koopa Cape Mega Race

In the waters of Koopa Cape (top screen), Unagi swims.

Several Unagis reappear in Mario Kart Wii, where they can be seen while traveling through the underwater tunnel in Koopa Cape, poking their heads out of the Pipes underwater. A Mega Unagi can be seen swimming outside of Chain Chomp Wheel in the aquarium outside the ring.

Mario Kart 7[]

Unagis also reappear again in Mario Kart 7, in this game, they can be seen in Daisy Cruiser swimming in the waters below decks alongside some Cheep Cheeps and Clampys. They are also seen in Koopa Cape swimming around the waters. The Unagis in this game are swimming high up and as a result, are completely harmless.

Mario Kart Arcade GP DX[]

In Mario Kart Arcade GP DX, they make a small appearance in the underwater parts of the race track Tropical Coast however they're too high to reach and as a result, don't have too much impact on the race rendering them completely harmless once again.

Mario Kart 8 / Mario Kart 8 Deluxe[]

Unagi's Waters

A single Unagi appears in an underwater section of the Mario Kart 8's track Dolphin Shoals, where players race along its body for a short section and can perform Tricks from its undulating body, Coins can also be seen along the Unagi's back as well. It returns in the enhanced Nintendo Switch port Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. Just like in previous installments of the Mario Kart series, the Unagi is completely harmless once again.

Trivia[]

  • The Gringills in Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Galaxy 2 are somewhat similar to the Unagis as they can either swim or reside in their holes.
    • What's more is the swimming ones mainly swim aimlessly and the hole-dwelling Gringills poke their heads out to bite the plumbers much like the Unagis.
  • Unagi is the Japanese word for "freshwater eel."
