Trace Race is a recurring minigame in the Mario Party series. It first appears in Mario Party 4 as a battle mini-game, then it returns in both Mario Party: The Top 100 and Mario Party Superstars as a Free-for-All minigame.
Layout[]
The minigame takes place on a giant clipboard, and various stationery, such as crayons and stamps, and toys can be seen placed to the upper side. In Mario Party 4, each crayon and path is colored according to the character, with a relevant symbol appearing at the start. In Mario Party: The Top 100 and Mario Party Superstars, the standard player colors are used, with the symbol always being a mushroom.
Opening[]
The view zooms in to the start of a giant clipboard as the four characters jump on individually, each holding a giant crayon.
Gameplay[]
Each character has to use their giant crayon to trace a line on the path, with the line consisting of a series of turns, curves, and loops. At the end, the characters score points based on their accuracy of tracing the line. Whoever traced their line the most accurately is the winner, unless no one scores at least 30 points, in which case the game ends in a draw.
Ending[]
Once all four characters reach the end, the screen shows their traces from start to finish, calculating who was most accurate. In the minigame's Mario Party 4 and Mario Party Superstars iterations, this is followed by the winners performing their respective victory animation and the losing characters performing their respective losing animation. If it is a draw, every character does their losing animation.
