"Toad Warriors" is the thirteenth animated episode of The Super Mario Bros. Super Show!. It is paired with the live-action segment "E.C. The Extra Creepy."
Plot[]
Mario, Luigi, Princess Toadstool and Toad arrive in Carland where King Koopa (who takes on the alias King-of-the-Road Koopa for the episode) has stolen nearly all the spaghetti sauce in the land. As they drive along the road, a State Troopa pulls them over and keeps the group next to the car, although the Princess is rescued by a pilot in a makeshift helicopter. Her companions want to leave as well but the State Troopa leaves a Bob-Omb to guard them while he reports the incident. Toad provokes the Bob-Omb into lighting its own fuse alarming the State Troopa and the group escapes in the confusion.
Meanwhile, King-of-the-Road Koopa is busy terrorizing a rebel fort in the middle of the desert that has been making its own spaghetti sauce. While they put up a good fight, they are no match for his superior fire power and a Birdo squad that fires exploding eggs. The Marios, now free from the State Troopa, receive a distress call and come in to help. They are attacked on the way and are hurled into the sky. While in the sky Toad manages to grab a starman before they fall into the fort. Unfortunately, King-of-the-Road Koopa brings in his secret weapon, a very big Birdo known as a Thunder Birdo. It fires an egg, which nearly destroys the fort. Mouser wants to go in right away but King-of-the-Road Koopa cautions him to wait.
King-of-the-Road Koopa's caution proves to be well founded as the fort's inhabitants hid underground to avoid the assault. Deciding that they need a plan, the group decides to use the tanker of spaghetti sauce as a decoy for King-of-the-Road Koopa. Mario and the Princess will drive the tanker and Luigi will pilot the helicopter. Toad uses the starman to become the Toad Warrior. The starman gives him a new outfit and a motorcycle. Toad then takes up some bomb plants and the group makes a run for it.
After a chase scene, the State Troopas are beaten and only King-of-the-Road Koopa remains. Toad challenges him to a drag race, which he accepts. Later, King-of-the-Road Koopa challenges Toad to play chicken heading towards a gorge. Neither one stops but King-of-the-Road Koopa's vehicle doesn't make it across the gap and he falls into the river below. Toad's lighter vehicle makes it across. The starman's power then wears off and Toad ends up on a tricycle. Mario then decides to help himself to some of the spaghetti sauce.
Trivia/Goofs[]
- A State Troopa's car is Car 54 1\2, a reference to Car 54, Where Are You?.
- This episode parodies the film Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior.
- When only part of the Thunder Birdro is shown it's green, but when all of it is shown, it's pink.
- The Starman loses its face after Toad takes it.
- Toad inexplicably gets a tricycle after losing his Starman powers.
- Toad's Toad Warrior helmet makes another appearance in the episode "The Trojan Koopa."
- This is the first time Toad is seen powering up.
