The time limit is a game mechanic in the Mario franchise and video games at large. The first Mario game to implement the mechanic is Super Mario Bros.
Description[]
Time limits force the player's character to complete a certain objective on time, such as reaching the end of a level within a given time. They are almost always represented by a timer in the HUD. In some cases, a time limit indicates the duration of an object being activated before deactivating again. In the Mario Party series, nearly every minigame has a time limit, which typically ends prematurely if a character wins.
In Super Mario series[]
The timer appears in every 2D installment of the Super Mario series except Super Mario Bros. 2 and Super Mario Bros. Wonder. In most of the games, the timer decreases every 0.6 or 0.7 seconds. When the timer goes below 100 seconds, a short tune plays to alert the player to complete the level sooner, and the background music plays faster. If it reaches zero, Mario or another playable character loses a life. In New Super Luigi U and the Super Mario Maker games, the timer decreases every second.
Super Mario Bros.[]
The timer decreases every 0.4 seconds. The timer in a level ends when Mario or Luigi activates the flagpole at the end. The remaining time counts down, and the player earns fifty seconds for each second remaining on the timer.
Super Mario Galaxy 2[]
Only the Speedy Comet missions have a time limit. The game introduces + Clocks in those missions, and they only add ten seconds to the time limit.
Super Mario 3D Land[]
The time limit ends when activating a Goal Pole, much like in Super Mario Bros. and the New Super Mario Bros. subseries. Unlike before, when completing a level, the player receives an extra coin for every ten seconds remaining upon activating the flagpole.
In Mario Party series[]
In every game of the Mario Party series, a time limit shows the remaining amount of time left in a mini-game. The time limit comes in various numbers, including :03, :05 :10, :15, :20, :30, :45, 1:00, 1:30, 3:00 and 5:00, depending on the Mario Party game and minigame being played. The numbers counting down from the timer become larger when only five seconds are remaining.
Both the minigame and its timer start when the Mini-game Referee says "Start!" or "Go!" (depending on the game). When time is up, the characters are ranked, ending the minigame. The time limit can end prematurely if only one character remains, ending the minigame.
