Tiki Tong is an antagonist in the Donkey Kong series, making his debut as both the main antagonist and the final boss of Donkey Kong Country Returns. He is the leader of a gang of sapient tikis that call themselves the "Tiki Tak Tribe."

Profile[]

Physical description[]

Tiki Tong is based on a drum. He is cylindrical and seems to be made of wood, like most Tikis. His eyes are round and uneven, their pupils red and their sclerae black. His right eye has orange and purple stripes and pointed eyelids and his other eye has normal eyelids that are bare. Much like King K. Rool, who had antagonised Donkey before him, one of Tiki Tong's eyes is larger than the other. Tiki Tong has red markings around both his eyes and his ears contain red feathers. He wears a wooden crown with some orange triangular markings on the front and a purple outer ring.

Powers and abilities[]

Tiki Tong is able to summon fireballs from his mouth and is able to crush his foes with his hands.

Biography[]

Some time prior to the game, Tiki Tong ordered his gang, the Tiki Tak Tribe, to steal the bananas from Donkey Kong's hoard. At Tiki Tong's command, the Tiki Tak Tribe's tikis possess the creatures that live on Donkey Kong's island, but Donkey Kong manages to keep his mind free from their control. As the possessed creatures steal the bananas from his hoard, Donkey Kong goes in hot pursuit to find the root of the problem, bringing his buddy Diddy Kong with him.

The two Kongs fight their way to Tiki Tong's fortress, where Tiki Tong undergoes a ritual to become stronger, only to meet his own demise when Donkey Kong gives it his all.

In Donkey Kong Country Returns[]

Tiki Tong makes his debut in Donkey Kong Country Returns with his gang; Tiki Tong himself is the final boss.

Battle[]

Phases 1 and 2[]

Tiki Tong uses his giant hands to crush Donkey Kong. However, these hands have a weak point: Donkey Kong must smash their backside, not necessarily with his hand slap; a regular stomp will do. When one hand is disabled, phase 2 begins; how many hits it takes to finish phase 1 therefore depends on how Donkey Kong aims his attacks and dictates how many hits it takes to finish phase 2; both take four hits total to finish. The three attacks that Tiki Tong can perform with his hands are detailed as follows:

  • Tiki Tong claps his hands together. During the second phase, he will position the hand that has not been disabled yet at the side appropriate to which hand it is (if it's his right hand that is still active, Tiki Tong places his hand on the left side, and if it's his left hand that is still active, the hand is placed on the right) and swings it towards the opposite side to crush Donkey Kong against the wall.
  • Tiki Tong places his hands either palms-up or backsides-up and sweeps his hands vertically across the stage. Due to their slight elevation above the ground, the hands can be avoided by ducking. If the hands are landed on when they are palm-up, they will close, damaging Donkey Kong. If their backsides are face-up, the hands can be damaged by jumping onto their backside. During the second phase of the fight, Tiki Tong will only use the hand that has not been disabled yet.
  • Tiki Tong slams one of his hands palm-downwards in an attempt to crush Donkey Kong from above, rendering that hand's backside vulnerable to getting stomped if his attack misses (Donkey Kong will be prohibited from stomping the hand if the attack connects due to his restricted movement until the hand lifts.).

Final phase[]

When Donkey Kong disables both of Tiki Tong's hands, Tiki Tong begins his next phase, dropping fireballs from his mouth onto the ground, sometimes mistakenly dropping a heart; the fireballs also move slowly, so Donkey Kong can get out of their way to avoid getting his fur burned. Tiki Tong can also dive downwards to ram Donkey Kong from the side, or slam his face into the ground. When the latter attack concludes, Donkey Kong must smash the top of Tiki Tong's head; again, a regular stomp will do. After three hits, Tiki Tong is defeated.

In Super Smash Bros. for Wii U[]

A trophy of Tiki Tong appears in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U. The trophy's description reads: "In the lava-filled Volcano region awaits Tiki Tong, the leader of the Tiki Tak Tribe. He liquefies a whole pile of bananas into goo, and then - instead of eating it - spits it all over his minions and fuses them to him! Ew! The Kongs'll have to hold off on complaining about how disgusting it all is - taking Tiki Tong out takes prioritiki."

Trivia[]

  • Tiki Tong is the only tiki who is fought directly as a boss in Donkey Kong Country Returns, while the other Tikis only create the bosses from other sources.
    • He is also the only tiki that does not get sent flying after they are defeated, as after being beaten by Donkey Kong, he explodes.
  • Tiki Tong slightly resembles the Gohdan from The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker due to his head-and-hands design as well as his method of defeat: disable the hands first, then attack the head. However, while Link had to feed the Gohdan with his bombs to attack the boss's head, Tiki Tong has his weak point placed beneath his crown, more specifically on the flat surface on top of his head, and Donkey Kong has to stomp on it.
  • Tiki Tong's trophy in Super Smash Bros. 4 combines the words "tiki" and "priority" to make a pun.
  • The image that appears if Donkey Kong dies prior to his encounter with Tiki Tong is a question mark, presumably to avoid spoilers. However, if he dies to Tiki Tong specifically, the death screen shows him as a silhouette instead.
    • As a result, Tiki Tong is the only Tiki that cannot be revealed before the boss stage of the world in which Donkey Kong encounters them.
  • Tiki Tong has the longest stage from Donkey Kong Country Returns, since his level has a long vertical section where Donkey Kong must ride a rocket upwards avoiding obstacles. The other bosses make their lairs within in levels where Donkey Kong starts close to the boss in question without many obstacles (if any) in his way.
  • Tiki Tong is one of five bosses from Donkey Kong Country Returns to have a weak point that changes throughout the fight; during his first two phases, Tiki Tong must be hit on the hands, and during his last phase, the top of his head must be attacked.
    • Captain Greenbeard and his crew must be hit on the head, then flipped over, then struck on the bottom.
    • The Magnoruby must be defeated by destroying his tail.
    • Thugly can be hit on either his backside or his belly.
    • During the first phase of his battle, Colonel Pluck must be damaged by tearing his robot's circuitry. After the robot's legs fall off, the boss must be attacked directly.
  • Tiki Tong is the only major Tiki that does not have eyes with white sclerae; his eyes are instead black.
  • Tiki Tong is the only boss to be fought in an area where they and Donkey Kong are not watched by spectators.
