Throwing Balloons is a Mini Battle featured in Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island and its remake Yoshi's Island: Super Mario Advance 3.

Gameplay[]

The Mini Battle involves Yoshi and a Bandit throwing a balloon back and forth as it gradually expands. Whenever the Yoshi receives the balloon, the player must input a combination of buttons shown onscreen (usually six buttons) to return it to the Bandit, which then attempts to do the same. The buttons must be input within a set Time Limit, and if the Yoshi or the Bandit inputs and incorrect button, the timer restarts. The balloon eventually pops on one of the characters, causing them to lose and ranking the other character the winner. If the Yoshi wins, he receives either a Special Item or one, two, or three extra lives.

Throwing Balloons, like the other Mini Battles, can be replayed from the Level Selection screen, where there is a four-button and six-button variation, the former of which has a two-player mode in which the second player controls the Bandit. In Yoshi's Island: Super Mario Advance 3, the two-player variation was removed but a five-button variation was added.

In Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island[]

Throwing Balloons can be played by unlocking the door to a Bonus Game Shack in the levels The Cave Of Chomp Rock, What's Gusty Taste Like?, Jungle Rhythm..., The Cave Of The Lakitus, BLIZZARD!!!, or KEEP MOVING!!!!. Throwing Balloons is the only Mini Battle that can be played in at least one level of each world.
