"The Unzappables" is the thirty-first animated episode of The Super Mario Bros. Super Show!. It is paired with the live-action segment "George Washington Slept Here."

Plot[]

Mario, Luigi, Princess Toadstool and Toad arrive in Crimeland where they discover the Koopa Pack is robbing the bank. The Marios attempt to stop them, but the Koopa Pack reveals they have Snifits and hold their enemies off while they make their getaway. The Princess angrily deduces that the crooks are working for Al Koopone, King Koopa's alias for the episode.

The criminals make their way to Al Koopone's hideout: a soda bar called the Koopa Club. Here they show Al Koopone his newest shipment: a bunch of hats. Al Koopone is happy with the shipment and orders his henchmen to put them on. They do as told and Al Koopone fires a snifit at them. To their amazement (and relief) they are unscathed. Al Koopone explains that the hats are magic and anyone who wears them is "unzappable." He then goes off to rob the First Mushroom Bank.

Al Koopone and his men arrive in the bank and blows open the vault only to discover the Marios (who had been tipped off by a stool pigeon). The Marios attack with vegetables but it doesn't work. Mario attempts a direct assault with his plunger with the same result. Al Koopone and his men capture their enemies. They are taken to a bridge where they are fitted with cement shoes and dropped into the river. Mario is fortunate enough to find a Starman and frees his friends.

Free of their prison the group goes to Al Koopone's hideout disguised as gangsters. Once inside, they find the hat checking room and steal the Unzappable hats. After Al Koopone and the Koopa Pack notice their enemies they once again attack with their snifits. The attack doesn't work and the Marios ward off the Koopa Pack with vegetables. As usual the Koopa King uses a magic potion and escapes into a warp zone.

With Al Koopone and his gang gone, Mario changes the name of the Koopa Club to Mario's Pasta Palace: the first Italian restaurant in Crimeland.

Trivia/Goofs[]

  • The episode's title is a spoof of the 1987 film The Untouchables.
  • In the Region 1 DVD release, this episode was relegated as a "bonus" episode (in Disc Three) because its accompanied live-action segment was not included due for unknown legal reasons.
  • The Plumber's Log number refers to the year 1929, the year the stock market crashed, causing the Great Depression; it is also the year the Saint Valentine's Day massacre occurred.
  • Al Koopone is a spoof on the gangster Al Capone.
  • A limbless Bob-omb appears in this episode.
  • The "Koopa Klub" which Koopa has his headquarters in Crimeland is called a "speakeasy," an illegal establishment during Prohibition where alcoholic drinks were served and patrons are admitted if they can provide the proper password.
  • The Princess points out the "hat checking room" but the sign above it says "Coat Checking Room."
  • Similarly to "Butch Mario & The Luigi Kid," "Pirates of Koopa," and "Karate Koopa," Koopa's speakeasy references alcohol, although is a soda bar to avoid adding alcohol references in the show.
  • This is the third episode to play a Michael Jackson song, the most played by any recording artist in The Super Mario Bros. Super Show!.
