"The Provolone Ranger" is the forty-fifth animated episode of The Super Mario Bros. Super Show!. It is paired with the live-action segment "Goodbye Mr. Fish."

Synopsis[]

Mario, Luigi, Princess Toadstool and Toad are traveling through the Wild Wild West part of the Mushroom Kingdom trying to deliver gold coins to the people of Mush Ridge who have lost all their money to Billy the Koopa (King Koopa's alias for the episode). He notices the group's stagecoach and ambushes them. Mario fights with him but is thrown off the stagecoach and Billy the Koopa takes it, passengers and all. Mario gives chase but since he is in Sudden Death Valley, the hot sun is too much for him. Just as Mario is about to collapse he is greeted by Pronto, a Native American Mushroom and the fastest feet in the west, who has need for a plumber. After Mario explains his plight, Pronto gets the idea that Mario will have to adopt a new identity as "the Provolone Ranger" and learn the ways of the West if he's going to defeat Billy.

Mario and Pronto work on Mario's gunplay and rope skills but neither one is any good. Fortunately, Mario is able to change his gun into a plunger gun and his lasso into a plumber's snake. After he finally manages to get Ostro riding down, he and Pronto attack a Koopa Troopa from Billy's gang with a silver plunger. Billy receives the message and sets up a trap for the "Provolone Ranger." The Provolone Ranger and Pronto follow a sign into the obvious trap. Pronto manages to take all the gang's Cobrats but is captured by a Pokey. He is taken prisoner and the Provolone Ranger is left behind.

As Billy gloats over his victory, the Provolone Ranger makes his way to The Double Cross Ranch, Billy's hideout. After a short fight, the Provolone Ranger emerges victorious but Billy attempts to escape with the gold. He's chased down and pulled off his Ostro by the Provolone Ranger's plumber's snake lasso. The gold is taken back and Billy's Ostro gets upset and runs off dragging his rider away.

The gold is returned to the people of Mush Ridge and the Provolone Ranger says good-bye to Pronto. As the group leaves, an old Mushroom mentions that he wishes he had a chance to invite the Provolone Ranger to dinner. The Provolone Ranger then speeds back eager for the meal.
