"The Pied Koopa" is the twentieth animated episode of The Super Mario Bros. Super Show!. Its corresponding live-action segment is "Super Plant."

Synopsis[]

Mario, Luigi, Princess Toadstool and Toad have arrived in Pastaland. Prior to arriving, King Koopa (under the alias Pied Koopa) uses a magic flute to lure all the local Mushroom children out of town. Meanwhile, Toad shows off the Pasta Trees and Lake Spaghetti Sauce of Pasta Land. The Marios start their feast and go to meet Mayor Fettuccine. However, the Mayor explains that Koopa has stolen all their children. Mouser shows up and demands their entire pasta crop as ransom. While the Mayor decides to consent Mario insists that he saves the children and he and his companions follow Mouser to Koopa's castle.

The group arrives at the castle but is dropped into the moat. There they are attacked by Albatosses dropping Bob-ombs from the sky and Koopa Troopas throwing spears from the shore. With nowhere else to go the group dives and finds a POW Block. Mario hurtles the block at the castle, which drains the moat into the castle dungeon. The group escapes into the castle but run into Koopa who throws them back in. He then releases a school of Trouters to kill them. The group escapes by holding onto hanging shackles and later by Mario finding a Bob-omb that he uses to blow a hole in the dungeon draining the water and the Trouters.

Meanwhile Koopa is upset over the children having a good time and orders that they be locked up and put under heavy guard. When the Marios see this, they make plumbing instruments and play a song to lead the Koopa Troopas away. Bowser chases after them but is stopped by Mouser pulling the drawbridge out from under him when he discovers Koopa plans to put him in charge of the children. Because of that, Koopa's magic flute is lost, and is permanently defective.

The group returns to the town and Mario and Luigi receive not only a pasta feast but also medals called The Order of the Golden Meatball for rescuing the children.

Trivia/Goofs[]

  • This episode is loosely based on The Pied Piper of Hamelin.
  • Originally when the Marios played their instruments they played "Hit the Road Jack" by Ray Charles. This was cut out and replaced with an instrumental song in the DVD versions.
  • During a rerun on the Family Channel (mid-1990s), the version containing the original "Hit the Road Jack" music was aired. Other Family Channel reruns of the program had replaced songs with instrumentals, as heard on the 2006 DVD releases.
  • Toad dropped from the shackles before Mario, but when Mario is dropping down Toad is seen hanging on the shackles again.
  • The POW Block has a different effect in the cartoon than in the games. In the games using the POW Block would hit all enemies on the screen. In the cartoon it acts as a bomb.
