"The Great Gold Coin Rush" is the thirty-eighth animated episode of The Super Mario Bros. Super Show!. It is paired with the live-action segment "Game Show Host."

Plot[]

Mario, Luigi, Princess Toadstool and Toad race through the Wild Wild West in a stagecoach closely followed by King Koopa. Though Mario does his best to ward off the attack, the reins are shot out of Luigi's hands and the group goes off a cliff. Fortunate enough to escape relatively unharmed the Marios run into an old pipe in order to escape. Klaimjump Koopa (King Koopa's alias during the episode) notices their escape and tosses in a Bob-omb sealing them in.

Caught in the dark, the group follows a light and discovers a massive pile of gold coins, which is identified as the "lost gold coin mine." Toad quickly grabs up some coins and the Mario Bros. dig their way out of the mine. They come up in a ghost town called Lonesome Mushroom, which is inhabited by only one man, Calamity Clem. Toad asks about an assay office so he can see if the coins are real gold. When it's pointed out that the gold is genuine a group of Mushroom People that inexplicably happened to be in the area overhear it and start digging. Unfortunately, Klaimjump Koopa hears it and decides to take over the town. He makes a quick attack and captures every Mushroom Person, including Toad. The Mario Bros., the Princess and Calamity Clem manage to escape.

Toad's friends sneak back into town, only to find it has been deserted. Klaimjump Koopa has taken all of the Mushroom Miners into slaves and is forcing them to bring him all the gold in the mines. The Princess wants to put a stop to the cruelty but cannot. Mario mentions that they need Fire Flowers and Calamity Clem mentions that there's a fire flower mine nearby. The group heads for the mine and finds the mother load of fire flowers. Both Mario and Luigi become super and head back to face Klaimjump Koopa.

Meanwhile, the last of the gold has been brought to Klaimjump Koopa but his greed still isn't slaked. When he finds that the Mushroom Miners will bring him no more gold he threatens them. Fortunately, the Marios appear at the nick of time and fight off his Snifits. Klaimjump Koopa kidnaps the Princess and takes her away on a mine cart. The Marios give chase and manage to get her away from Klaimjump Koopa. They then head him off and stop their cart in front of his, sending him flying away.

Trivia/Goofs[]

  • The Plumber's Log number 1849 is a reference to the year when the California Gold Rush is commonly believed to have started, but it actually began in 1848.
  • Though the stagecoach reins are shown to be destroyed, there is no explanation as to why the yoke was broken as well.
  • At one point Luigi has an animation showing him reverting from super form but he was wearing normal clothing to begin with.
