"The Adventures of Sherlock Mario" is the eighteenth animated episode of The Super Mario Bros. Super Show!. It is paired with the live-action segment "Plumbers of the Year."

Synopsis[]

Mario's group arrives in the city of Victoria in search of the great detective, Herlock Solmes, because Princess Toadstool thinks he can get rid of King Koopa. Unfortunately, when they arrive, they hear calls for help and find only Solmes' hat and magnifying glass laying on the ground. Mario takes them up and adopts the identity of Sherlock Mario so that he can find the missing detective. Meanwhile, King Koopa, who goes by the alias Professor Kooparity for the episode, has Solmes tied up in the sewers and mocks him for his capture. Solmes reveals that he knows of Kooparity's plan to steal the Retro Reuter and flood the streets of Victoria with it. Unfortunately, as he is tied up, there is nothing he can do to foil Kooparity's plans.

The Mario Bros. find their way into Solmes' house on Bonkers Street. and Mario searches for clues. At first their search is fruitless but they find a dictation machine that has a recorded warning from Solmes that reveals Kooparity's plans. Kooparity and his minions infiltrate Victoria Tower and are about to steal the Retro Reuter when Mario and company show up to stop them, hiding in suits of armor. The two groups battle, but Kooparity and his henchmen come out victorious, due to the good guys' decision to fight with plungers. Kooparity leaves their enemies tied up underneath a swinging axe pendulum. However, Mario manages to escape by retrieving a meatball sandwich, which gives him the strength to break the ropes binding himself à la Popeye. He immediately strips and tears away all of the ropes on Luigi before the two manage to carry their friends, just in time.

Thinking that his enemies are dead, Kooparity has his henchmen set up the Retro Reuter to carry out his plan. But on the surface, the Marios follow a trail of the Kooparity's footprints and eventually track him to his hideout. Unfortunately, they arrive too late as the Koopa Pack has finished the machine and activate it, flooding Victoria. The two groups fight again; but this time, the Marios emerge victorious, hurling Kooparity into the Retro Reuter, thereby causing the water to drain from the streets. Kooparity flees and Solmes is released. Back in Solmes' apartment, Mario seeks lunch and puts his hand into what he believes to be a lunchbox. It turns out not to be a lunch box, but a carrying cage for the Killer Kitty of the Kaskervilles.

Trivia/Goofs[]

  • The Killer Kitty of Caskerville is a spoof of The Hound of the Baskervilles.
  • This episode is an obvious spoof on the Sherlock Holmes novels. King Koopa's alias, Professor Kooparity, is a reference to Sherlock Holmes antagonist Professor Moriarty.
  • Herlock Solmes' address is 221 B Bonkers St. Victoria.
  • This episode appears as a bonus feature on the single-disc DVD release Mario's Greatest Movie Moments as a reward for finishing the DVD's trivia game. However, due to a glitch, the episode restarts right after the commercial break midway through the second act. It is then followed by the second half of the live-action segment (the first half is mysteriously absent).
  • Despite the fact he was wearing shoes, the footprints left by Professor Kooparti have visible, clawed toes.
  • "I-Spy Theme" by Earle Hagen is the only instrumental (non-vocal) featured song.
