"Join Mario, Bowser, Peach, and original characters Mallow and Geno, in an RPG filled with twists and turns."
Nintendo[1]

Super Mario RPG is an role-playing Mario game for the Nintendo Switch. It is a remake of Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars, and it was first announced in the June 21, 2023 Nintendo Direct. Unlike the original version, Super Mario RPG was developed by ArtePiazza, but it retains Nintendo as its publisher. The game was released internationally on November 17, 2023.

Plot[]

Changes and additions from the original[]

Overall[]

  • Being a remake, this game features much more fluid animations between the characters in enemies. In addition, extra scenes have been added for each character that joins Mario's side.
  • After winning a battle, Mario now takes off his cap instead of flashing the "peace sign." Whenever he levels up, the peace sign is replaced with a "thumbs up" pose.
  • This game now displays how much experience a character has before they are able to level up.
  • The Monster List has been added to this game. Much like the Tattle List from the Paper Mario series, the Monster List displays all of the enemies and bosses Mario and his friends have encountered through their journey.
  • Unique enemies called "Special Enemies" now may appear during fights. These enemies are stronger versions of their ordinary counterparts and, upon defeating them, release a single Frog Coin.
  • The World Map now features markers on where Mario can go. There is also a red flag that appears that shows where the player has to go next.
  • Some bosses can be battled again, with them being stronger than their first battle.

Gameplay mechanics[]

  • This game now features two difficulty modes: Breezy and Normal Mode. Breezy Mode allows the player to carry more items and enemies and bosses are a little weaker while Normal Mode causes the player to carry less items and the enemies and bosses are stronger. The difficulty can be changed at any time, but the player must be wary of their item count.
  • Items can now be stored away and stacked saving inventory space.
  • There is now an indicator for when the action command can be used for all attacks. Executing it correctly will result in every enemy on screen being damaged if it's an attacking move.
  • Several moves have been repurposed. For example, Mallow's Psychopath is now called Thought Peek and it also allows the player to view how much HP a foe has instead of just viewing their thoughts and weaknesses.
  • There is now an option to quickly exit to the World Map or the Title Screen.
  • This game now adds in an autosave feature that saves whenever Mario enters a new major room allowing the player to easily get back on progress.
  • In battle, the player can now switch out party members at any time (aside from Mario). This is especially helpful if someone gets inflicted with a status aliment such as Sleep and can swap that person out for a healthier character.
  • A new battle mechanic known as the Triple Move has been added to this game. With the Triple Move, Mario will be able to perform a collaboration attack with two other party members in order to do damage to their foes. This can be done by filling up the gauge which is accomplished by hitting the action command. The Triple Move varies depending on who Mario's two other active party members are.
  • In battle, if an Action Command is correctly timed while fighting an enemy, surrounding enemies will also take damage. This is called splash damage.[citation needed]

Other[]

  • A secret shop has added to Booster Pass that allows Mario to pay 3 Frog Coins in order to buy any missed Thought Peek pages for the Monster List.
  • Princess Peach is now referred to as "Peach" in this game compared to the original when she was called by her last name, "Toadstool."
  • Bowser's army is now referred to as "Bowser's Minions" instead of the Koopa Troop from the original.
