Super Mario Advance (スーパーマリオアドバンス Sūpāmarioadobansu?, Super Mario Advance) (also called Super Mario Advance 1, Super Mario Bros. 2: Super Mario Advance 1, or Super Mario Advance 1: Super Mario Bros. 2) is a GBA remake of the North American version of Super Mario Bros. 2 using the Super Mario All-Stars engine. It was released for the Game Boy Advance as a launch title in 2001. In the game, players choose between Mario, Luigi, Peach and Toad and go through the world of Subcon.

On May 19, 2023, Super Mario Advance along with Super Mario Advance 2: Super Mario World and Yoshi's Island: Super Mario Advance 3 returned to the Nintendo Switch for Nintendo Switch Online available from May 26, 2023.[1]

Changes from original[]

  • Princess Toadstool is referred to as Peach.
  • Most characters have their dialogue lines.
  • The arcade game Mario Bros. has been re-made to play.
  • The boss of World 3 is Robirdo instead of Mouser.
  • A new multiplayer mode based on Mario Bros. was made to use the Game Boy Advance's new 4 player Link cable connection.

Gameplay[]

The player can start the game by choosing "Single Player" or "Multiplayer."

In single-player mode, the player can choose between Super Mario Bros. 2 or Mario Bros.. The player can choose a file after choosing Super Mario Bros. 2. The player can choose Mario, Luigi, Toad or Princess Peach. The map will appear on the screen, indicating the level the player is on, the player can start the level.

The screen will scroll when the player moves. The player can pick up enemies and vegetables on the ground. Lick other video games, the player can die on the level if he/she touches an enemy or hazard, or falls to the bottomless pit.

Trivia[]

  • According to the game's source code that was found in the 2020 Nintendo leak, the tentative titles were indicated to be these:
    • Super Mario USA: Japanese, the name in Japan.
    • Super Mario Bros. Deluxe 2 and Super Mario Bros. 2 Deluxe, the names in international places outside of Japan.
  • It seems to indicate that the game was originally going to be a sequel to Super Mario Bros. Deluxe.
  • During the cover of Volume 143 of Nintendo Power, an early screenshot os Super Mario Advance shows one of the two backgrounds in World 5-2 has a light color palette like the other backgrounds, in the final game, they remain in their original color palette.
