Super Mario

"WHO-HO-HOA! I'm tall!"
Mario, The Super Mario Bros. Movie

Super Mario is a form that Mario takes on when touching a Super Mushroom. The Super Mario form is named for the Super Mario series, and it makes its overall debut in the series' first installment, Super Mario Bros.. Other playable characters in general, mostly Luigi, can take on the Super form, in which case their name is preceded by the word "Super," such as Super Luigi, which also debuts in Super Mario Bros. given that it features Luigi as player two.

Description[]

The Super Mario form turns a character larger, allowing them to withstand an extra hit, upon which they shrink back down to their Small form. The Super Mario form is generally associated with the Super Mario series, and otherwise serves as their standard appearance in other Mario-related media, given that the mechanic of changing from Small Mario to Super Mario and vice versa does not appear.

Most 2D Super Mario installments except Super Mario Bros. 2 have Mario or another playable character start off in their Small form rather than their Super form. What follows the Super Mario form is a power-up form with a unique ability, most commonly Fire Mario, a form in which Mario can shoot fireballs at enemies.

In several 3D Super Mario installments, the first of which is Super Mario 64, Mario takes on his Super appearance, and the Small Mario form does not appear. This is because the earlier 3D Super Mario installments feature a health meter so that if Mario takes damage, he loses segments of his health rather than turn into Small Mario.

The first 3D Super Mario game to directly feature the Super form alongside the Small form is Super Mario 3D Land, followed by Super Mario 3D World and its spinoff Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker. Like Super Mario Bros. 2, the playable characters of these games start off their Super form, but if they take damage, they turn into their Small form. In these games, whenever a character loses an extra life, they restart from a level or a checkpoint in their Super form.
