Sumo Bros. are a species of large Koopas featured in some Mario games. They first appear in Super Mario World, and are rarely encountered by Mario and company during their travels. Sumo Bros. have a large body like that of a Sledge Bro.

Profile[]

Physical Appearance[]

Sumo Bros. are Koopas with orange skin and brown boots and a black shell. Their eyes are small and black, lacking pupils. A spike-like horn can be seen on their heads, rendering them immune to stomps.

Behavior[]

Sumo Bros. stomp their feet on the ground and fire will erupt on the platform under the platform they are on.

Etymology[]

They are called Sumo Bros. because they are considerably large like sumo wrestlers, and bear little resemblance to Hammer Bros.

History[]

Super Mario World[]

Sumo Bro

Sumo Bros. first appear in Super Mario World. In this game, they are rare enemies. They stand on a set of blocks and stomp down. Their stomp attack creates a spark that, upon touching the ground, splits into fire and travels across the ground in either direction. To defeat them, Mario/Luigi will need to be under the effects of a Starman and Cape Feather, and for the latter, they must spin their cape onto the Sumo Bros. Throwing a Koopa Shell at a Sumo Bro also defeats it. Another way to defeat a Sumo Bro is by jumping beneath the block they are standing on, but it is more difficult due to the spark that they create from stomping.

If Mario or Luigi try to jump onto a Sumo Bro, they get injured due to there being a spike on the Sumo Bro's head.

New Super Mario Bros. U/New Super Luigi U/New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe[]

Sumo Bros. once again appear in New Super Mario Bros. U as well as New Super Luigi U and New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe after a long absence from the Super Mario series. They attack very similarly to their appearance in Super Mario World, however, the shock wave that comes from their stomps are now smaller, and no longer raise the ground when being struck, instead, two bolts of electricity are produced which briefly travel across the ground. As before, stomping on a Sumo Bro. is futile due to them having a spike. In this game, just as before, to defeat them, Mario needs to hit the block they are standing on. Additionally, the use of the Fire Flower can now also be used. The Sumo Bros. can also be frozen with the effects of the Ice Flower and Penguin Suit and the effects of a Starman can defeat them instantly. Upon defeat, Sumo Bros. flail their arms and legs, rather than being stuck in a certain position. The electricity bolts they produce can be cancelled out with Iceballs. Sumo Bros. appear in Screwtop Tower, Sumo Bro Bridge, and Sumo Bro's Spinning Tower.

This game also introduces a Sumo Bro boss named Boss Sumo Bro, who is fought in Rock-Candy Mines. This boss makes his lair in Screwtop Tower. Boss Sumo Bro looks very similar to the other Sumo Bros. but he also wears a necklace composed of baubles and has slanted eyes. Boss Sumo Bro is also enlarged by Kamek's magic and possesses the ability to jump, moving around his arena to different platforms in order to strike. The same strategy of jumping onto Boss Sumo Bro's platform between attacks for a better opportunity to attack can be used on him; however, rather than being defeated, the Boss Sumo Bro. only falls onto his backside, whereupon he can be stomped on. After three hits to his stomach, the Boss Sumo Bro. is defeated.

Super Mario Party[]

The Sumo Bros. make their Mario Party series debut in Super Mario Party. In this game, they appear in 3 minigames in the game: Lightning Round, Rattle and Hmmm, & Absent Minded. In the first minigame, they appear on platforms above the players who are collecting raining Coins; the Sumo Bros. will try to shock the players by sending their electric currents down on the players, players hit will lose coins. In the last two minigames mentioned, Sumo Bros. also make cameos as among the selectable choices alongside various other enemies.

Paper Mario: The Origami King[]

Sumo Bros. their debut in the Paper Mario series in Paper Mario: The Origami King, where King Olly folded and warped them into soldiers for his army. Combatable Sumo Bros. only appear as flunkies for the Boss Sumo Bro.'s battle. They steal certain panels on the rings and will not let go of them until Mario defeats them. Using either Vellumental Magic Circle will defeat them instantly (dealing 200 damage). After all four Sumo Bros. are defeated, the two on the clouds will land alongside Boss Sumo Bro, and will each steal a Magic Circle.

Sumo Bros. are also seen as enemies in the Origami Castle. Here, they will flip certain paths if they spot Mario, who must take cover behind a wall if the Sumo Bro. is looking his way, they can be bothersome in this sense so always take cover upon sight of one.
