Submarine is one of the Yoshi transformations featured in the Yoshi's Island series. It made its first appearance in Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island, in which a Yoshi can temporarily transform into a Submarine by touching a Morph Bubble containing its picture. The Submarine makes a reappearance in both Yoshi's Island DS and Yoshi's New Island, the latter requiring a Yoshi to instead go through certain Whirly Gates to transform into a Submarine.
Submarine is one of two Yoshi transformations to appear in every Yoshi's Island installment, the other being the Helicopter.
Description[]
The Submarine can be used to traverse bodies of water, which Yoshis cannot traverse due to their inability to dive and swim underwater. Being in Submarine form allows a Yoshi to fire homing torpedoes at enemies. A Yoshi can be in Submarine form up until touching a Yoshi Block or reaching the Time Limit, upon which the Yoshi is forced back to the location of the Morph Bubble and returns to his usual form. Like other transformations, if a Yoshi is injured by an enemy while in Submarine form, the player temporarily loses control of him for about one second.
Trivia[]
- In Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island, the artwork shows a Brown Yoshi in this form, despite him not having an opportunity to do so within the game itself. A similar instance of this exists with an artwork of a Cyan Yoshi in Car form, which he cannot do in the game itself.
