Stu is a minor antagonist from Donkey Kong Country Returns. He is a bird who is hypnotized by Gong Oh from the Tiki Tak Tribe. Stu acts as the boss of the third area, which is a ruin.
Description[]
Stu has red feathers and blue feet. He has blue eyes and a golden crown with a red jewel. After his cauldron is destroyed (which defeats him), Stu is shown with a bare pink torso, although the torso being bare is implied to have been caused by the cauldron being destroyed due to how many times he got hit by bombs.
History[]
In Donkey Kong Country Returns (3D/HD)[]
Stu makes his first appearance being contained in an egg. When Donkey Kong arrives on the scene to rescue his Bananas, Gong Oh plays his music, stirring Stu awake and causing him to break out of the egg and enter a cauldron filled with bombs, triggering the fight. Upon defeat, the cauldron is destroyed.
Combat[]
Stu attacks by dropping bombs from his cauldron, and Donkey Kong has to throw them back to defeat him. After Stu's cauldron takes one hit, Stu will begin adding gold bombs to his arsenal; these explode rather quickly and their blast creates flames that move through the arena if the bomb was touching the ground. Every three or four bombs, Stu will perform a swoop attack to kick Donkey Kong with his sharp talons. After Stu is hit three times, he will drop a missile-shaped bomb that creates fiery shockwaves that can be avoided by standing on top of the pillars (which are shortened by the blast the first time Stu drops this particular bomb) or jumping with good timing. Stu will also perform a carpet-bombing move and start swooping twice, and may send some Tiki-esque bombs called Tiki Pops. After Stu is hit thrice more, he is finally defeated, leaving the Gong Tiki vulnerable.
In Super Smash Bros. for Wii U[]
Stu makes a cameo in this game with a trophy in the Wii U version. His description reads: "In the Ruins area, Gong Tiki puts a mysterious egg into a golden cauldron and then jumps in after it. Five seconds later, the newly hatched chick breaks holes for its wings and legs and takes to the air. When Stu chucks bombs from his cauldron, pick them up and return the explosives to him. It's only fair, right?"
Trivia[]
- Stu is similar to Bowser in Super Mario World in terms of his battle patterns, as they both drop objects from their vessels and the protagonist has to use these objects to defeat the bosses in question. (Stu drops bombs from his cauldron while Bowser drops Mechakoopas from his Koopa Clown Car.
- Stu's battle theme is one of three boss songs that can be unlocked, the others being the themes of the Mangoruby and Tiki Tong.
- Stu is the only boss in Donkey Kong Country Returns who cannot be jumped on.
Behind the Scenes[]
Etymology[]
Stu's is derived from "stew," referencing how he wears a cauldron as armour.
Nomenclature[]
In Japanese, Stu is called Sutyū (written ステュー), from shichū ("stew"; written シチュー). This name is transliterated into Chinese; thusly, he is called "Sītí" in that language (written 斯缇). His Spanish name, Condorado, comes from condor ("condor") and dorado ("golden"). His Italian name is Bombadino, referencing the word bomba, a synonym of esplosivo ("bomb," "explosive"). German translates his name as "Bomberich," from bombe ("bomb") and the German suffix -rich for male animals. French calls him Bomby, from English "bomb."
