A Stomp is a second part of a Jump when landing on an enemy. The move first appears in Super Mario Bros.. Not all stomps occur from jumps, like when Mario falls off a platform. Stomps are generally Mario’s primary attack, as it requires a type of power up such as Fire Flower to attack enemies in another way. Some enemies are invulnerable to being stomped on, including spiked, ghostly, underwater, or fiery enemies. As a result, Mario will have to defeat the specified enemy a different way. If Mario attempts to stomp on enemies that are invulnerable to stomps, Mario himself can take damage.
Enemies that are vulnerable to stomps are often flattened, but some, such as Koopa Troopas, retreat into their shell(s) when stomped on. In some games such as Super Mario World, Koopa Troopas fly out of their shells when stomped on. One stomp will defeat a shell-less Koopa Troopa.
