The Start Signal is an item that only Lakitu can use at the start of the race/battle. The signal also provides the Pre-race Countdown Timer. This device has three lightbulbs and each one of the three bulbs tells one when the race or battle starts. The signal's sequence goes from top to bottom in the first three games (left to right in later games). If the first two or three lights of the signal is red or yellow (depending on which game is played), the engine must be started and prepared for the Rocket Start technique when the signal turns green, that means GO! The design of the item varies depending on which Mario Kart game is played. For strange reasons, the Start Signal does not appear in Mario Kart DS.
