"Stars in Their Eyes" is the tenth animated episode of The Super Mario Bros. Super Show!. It is paired with the live-action segment

Synopsis[]

Mario, Luigi, Princess Toadstool, and Toad are flying through space in a ship trying to escape from King Koopa's Space Troopas but are shot down. They crash land on the Planet Quirk and loose their fuel and supplies.

On Planet Quirk, the inhabitants, who are known as Quirks, are forced to work for King Koopa and are being threatened by Mouser (called "Astromouser" here) to keep them working. In a reference to The Wizard of Oz, Mouser is crushed under the ship. Quirk's gravity is far too low for the earthlings and they have to use tools to hold themselves down. Without fuel or supplies the group cannot leave but the Quirks offer to help. Mouser crawls out from under the ship and chases the Marios away. The groups leap into a ship and leave but Mouser hits it with a Bob-omb. Mario is able to fix the leak and the Quirks claim that all supplies can be found at their factory. The group seems to be doing well but the alarm is sounded.

In order to sneak into the factory the members of the group disguise themselves as Quirks. They get into the factory but are dumped onto a conveyor belt with moon rocks. While on the belt they see the supplies they need. They evade the Koopa Troopas but run into King Koopa (known by his alias Moon Man Koopa for this episode), who catches them with a magnet. The groups is chained up and put into slavery making chains. Mario apologizes but finds out that the Quirks had always been his slaves. Mario attempts to incite the Quirks into revolution but it fails. Moon Man Koopa reveals the chains are electronically controlled and leaves.

Mario desperately tries to break his chains with his hammer but finds it doesn't work. But the strange rock he's on starts to make music and the chains open. The group attempts to escape and get their supplies. The Quirks insist their friends make their escape saying that there is no time to remove their own chains. Moon Man Koopa tries to stop the Marios with the magnet but the Quirks intervene.

Finally, the group returns to its ship and takes off. Moon Man Koopa follows after them with his own ship. After a short battle, Moon Man Koopa gets the upper hand and it seems that he'll win, but Princess Peach drops Mario's emergency stash of pasta into King Koopa's ship. The ship malfunctions and falls towards Quirk. The Princess fears that Moon Man Koopa will re-enslave the Quirks, but they short out his ship by tooting the theme music from The Legend of Zelda, forcing him away and finally freeing themselves of his tyranny.

Trivia/Goofs[]

  • Toad doesn't need to wear a space helmet while every other major character does.
  • When Moon Man Koopa's ship's windshield is breaking a crack goes through a microphone that isn't part of the windshield.
  • Mario line to the Quirks, "Honk noses of the world, unite! You have nothing to lose, but your chains" spoofs what Karl Marx said at the end of his Communist Manifesto essay: "Workers of the world unite! You have nothing to lose but your chains." Furthermore, Mario raises his hammer in this scene mirroring a communist symbol.
  • The surface of the Planet Quirk with its canals and the slave-like treatment of its inhabitants reflects the late Victorian view of the planet Mars and its hypotheoretical inhabitants.
  • This is one of the few episodes in which King Koopa does not use a Warp Pipe to escape.
