"You get Star Points every time you beat an enemy. Every time you save up 100 Star Points, you'll go up a level."
Goompa

Star Points are recurring items in the Paper Mario series. Appearing after an enemy is defeated, this item allows Mario to level up once he receives 100 Star Points. Once Mario gains 100 Star Points, he has the option to level up his HP by five, his FP by five, or his BP by three.

The amount of Star Points given to Mario depends on the difficulty of the enemy. As he continues to level up, the Star Points he receives lessens.
