Super Mario

Star Coins are collectible items featured mainly in the New Super Mario Bros. series. They first appear in New Super Mario Bros..

Description[]

They are larger than normal coins, and depict a star. Almost every level in each game contains three, most games typically have over 200 Star Coins in all, and they are usuallyused to open up paths on the world map and to buy Touch Screen background images later on in the game however in some cases, Star Coins are also used to unlock secret levels. Usually, Star Coins are hard to reach, some need power-ups to obtain, such as the Propeller Mushroom, Super Leaf, and Flying Squirrel power-ups, and some coins require you to take the secret exit. Some other easier ways to get them is with the Flying Squirrel ability, Pink Baby Yoshi, and platforms created by the GamePad (if playing with a Wii Remote).

Star Coins make their debut in New Super Mario Bros.. In this game, three Star Coins can be found in each of the game's levels (with the exception of Toad Houses and Warp Cannons). When a Star Coin is collected, the player earns 1,000 points, and the Star Coin is displayed on the touch screen to indicate that it has been collected. When revisiting a level after collecting a Star Coin, a blue transparent Star Coin will be in its place (similar to already-collected Power Stars in the 3D Mario games). Star Coins are often found in secret areas or in various placements requiring the use of all the plumbers moves and abilities to obtain them. A Star Coin can be obtained by either making contact with it or by tossing an object at it such as a Shell.

Collecting Star Coins is required to fully complete the game 100%. Star Coins are used to clear out Star Coin Signs to unlock alternate paths, secret levels, Toad Houses (which all cost 5 Star Coins each), and alternate wallpapers upon the game's completion (which cost 20 Star Coins each). When all the Star Coins are collected in a world, whenever Mario spends his Star Coins a banner will appear on the level select screen of that world to indicate this. There are 240 Star Coins in the game and spending every single one of them is also a 100% requirement, once all the Star Coins are spent, an "All Spent" message will appear by the Star Coin's symbol on the World Map.
