Super Mario

Sproings are an enemy in Super Mario Bros. Wonder.

Profile[]

Physical description[]

Sproings are plant-like creatures with yellow nut shells covering their head. They have a green vine-like coil for a "neck."

Behaviour[]

Sproings are similar in their behaviour to the Rage-induced Pokey variant from Super Princess Peach, being contracted with nobody close to them, but if a player gets near, the enemy stretches, revealing the neck coil. Sproings revert back to their contracted form with nobody nearby.

In Super Mario Bros. Wonder[]

Sproings appear in Sproings in the Twilight Forest, whose Wonder Effect reflects their stretching ability.

Behind the Scenes[]

Etymology[]

Sproings take their name from "spring," reflecting how the green vine-like coil they have for a "neck," looks like a spring.

Names in other languages[]

In Japanese, Sproings are called Biyon (written ビヨン), from the Japanese onomatopoeia for bouncing (biyōn; written ビヨーン). In Chinese, they are merely called "Stretching Monsters," (Shēnsuō Guài; written 伸缩怪). Their Spanish name is bellotoing, from la belota ("acorn") and the onomatopoeia "boing," reflecting a springy sound. In Portuguese, their name is molatoing, from la melota ("spring") and the Portuguese onomatopoeia for a sudden springing noise, "toing." Their Italian name, esténzio, comes from the verb esténdersi ("to stretch") and the noun/adjective-forming suffix -io.
