Super Mario

Spiked Rollers (also called Spike Rollers or Spiky Rollers) are a recurring object in the Mario franchise. They first appear in Super Mario 3D Land.

Description[]

Spiked Rollers are spiked rolling pin-like obstacles that roll along the ground causing damage to those who make contact with them. Spiked Rollers can come in a wide range of different forms such as simply rolling around, swinging along chains, or even spinning around (in a similar fashion to a Spike Bar). Spiked Rollers can also be tossed by Spikes as an alternative to their usual Spiked Ball attacks. Spiked Rollers cannot be destroyed by any up front attacks however they are vulnerable to invincibility power-ups such as the Starman.

In Super Mario series[]

Super Mario 3D Land[]

Spiked Roller Balance

Spiked Rollers are first seen in Super Mario 3D Land where they are commonly seen in building-themed levels such as World 7-2 and Special 5-2. Spiked Rollers can come in two forms, in the first form, they are attached to two chains and constantly swing around. Most Spiked Rollers swing at 180º but there are also some (most commonly found in latter levels that can even swing at 360º). Spiked Rollers can also be found on tilting platforms being held in slots but as soon as Mario/Luigi walks on the platform balancing it in one direction, the Spiked Roller is released rolling until it either hits the next slot or the balance is evened out (making it impossible for the Spiked Roller to fall off the edge). There are some Spike Rollers (such as those in World 5-2) which are capable of rolling on their own at rather fast speeds. Spiked Rollers can only be destroyed with the effects of a Starman, Statue Leaf, or Invincibility Leaf.

Super Mario 3D World / Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury[]

Spike Rollers

A set of Spiked Rollers.

Spiked Rollers return in Super Mario 3D World as well as Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury, in these games, they are more common than they were in Super Mario 3D Land, Spike Rollers can come in many different forms in this game as well which include being attached to swinging chains as seen on The Bowser Express and Champion's Road, rolling round on balancing sifting platforms as seen in Spooky Seasick Wreck and Gigantic Seasick Wreck, in Footlight Lane, sets of Spike Rollers roll around circular platforms in an axis and some are also seen turning around block platforms in a similar fashion to the Spike Bars (and to an extent, Firebars). Some Spiked Rollers are capable of rolling around on their own as seen in Red Hot Run, and most importantly, Spikes also toss down Spiked Rollers at the heroes as their primary weapon rather than the Spiked Balls from earlier games. In the Bowser's Fury side of the remake, Cat Spikes also toss down Spiked Rollers. The Spiked Rollers can only be destroyed with the effects of a Starman, Lucky Bell, Invincibility Leaf, or Invincibility Bell.

In Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker[]

Spiked Roller Toss

Spiked Rollers function similarly as in Super Mario 3D World, although they are only tossed down by Spikes and they are only seen in one level, Windup Stairs as in other levels, Spikes use their usual Spiked Ball weapons.

In Mario Party: Star Rush[]

Spike's Revenge

Spiked Rollers return in the minigame Roller Revenge. During the minigame, Spikes are seen tossing Spiked Rollers at the players which they must avoid, if a player is hit by an incoming Spiked Roller three times, they are immediately eliminated from the minigame.

In Mario Tennis Aces[]

A Spiked Roller appears as apart of Spike's Special Shot, during his special shot, Spike will pull out a Spiked Roller and as the ball approaches, he will give it a hard whack sending it flying past his opponent(s) thus scoring a point.

In Paper Mario: The Origami King[]

Spike's Storage

Spiked Rollers with some Spiked Balls in Spike's Room.

Several Spiked Rollers can be seen inside Spike's Quarters in Bowser's Castle alongside some Spiked Balls suggesting that this is where the Spikes keep their weapons however the Spiked Rollers have no effect on the gameplay and cannot cause damage to Mario upon contact, Spiked Rollers aren't seen anywhere else in the game either.

Crossover appearances[]

Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle[]

Spiked Roller Dark

A Spiked Roller in the Spooky Trails.

A single Spiked Roller is seen at the Underwater Village, a location in Spooky Trails. It is seen stuck between some plants grown away from the main path. Beep-0 notes that whoever owned the Spiked Roller left the area quickly, claiming it is "an ominous sign". The weapons Spike Strike and Big Spike are modeled after Spiked Rollers, however despite this, their description refers to them as Skewers which is ironic as "Skewer" is one of the alternate names for the Spike Pillars.

Trivia[]

  • Spiked Roller are similar to both Spike Bars and Ball 'n' Chains as both can either sway or spin around respectively similarly to the Spiked Roller.
