Spike Bars are hazardous obstacles that are shown to first appear in Super Mario 3D Land. In the games they appear in, they are essentially duplicates of Fire Bars except without any burning properties. Instead, Spike Bars are segmented balls adorned in spikes. Unlike Fire Bars which are primarily found in Castles, Spike Bars can be found all over the place most notably in skies. Spike Bars behave identically to Firebars with the only major difference being their appearance.

History[]

Super Mario 3D Land[]

SM3DL World 5-3

Spike Bars in the Sky.

Spike Bars appear in Super Mario 3D Land, in this game, they are seen attached to blocks and spinning around them on an axis. They behave identically to the Fire Bars from the Castles however the major difference is that Spike Bars are spiked rather than fiery. Spike Bars are commonly found in sky-themed levels such as World 2-4 and World 5-3 but also make appearances in other platforming levels as well. Unlike Fire Bars, there aren't any Spike Bars that rotate on its side nor has a Spike Bar with more than two bars rotating at the same axis been spotted. Also, unlike Fire Bars, Spike Bars can be destroyed with the effects of a Starman or Invincibility Leaf.

Super Mario 3D World / Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury[]

Although Spike Bars are absent in Super Mario 3D World and Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury, the Spike Roller (which returns from Super Mario 3D Land) appears with the same function as the Spike Bars.

Super Mario Run[]

Spike Bar Green

A Large Spike Bar.

Spike Bars return in Super Mario Run primarily appearing in the level Spike Bar Jungle. In this game, their appearance has been updated giving them a green color making them look more thorny in appearance. Spike Bars once again behave identically to the Fire Bars however this time, they can spin in 2's, 3's, or even 4's requiring some quick weaves and swift maneuvers to avoid being spiked, the key is to move with the Spike Bars to avoid damage. Unlike Super Mario 3D Land, Spike Bars are effectively indestructible in this game and cannot be destroyed in any way.

Super Mario Odyssey[]

While Spike Bars don't appear in Super Mario Odyssey, a similar obstacle called the Moonsnake did. They behave similarly to Spike Bars can can be found on the Moon Kingdom.

Trivia[]

  • Spike Bars are similar to the Ball 'n' Chain as both obstacles are spinning spiked hazards that function similarly to the Fire Bars.
