Speed functions like initiative in the Dungeons & Dragons games, except there is no dice roll to determine the impact; instead, the Speed values are compared directly to one another. Those with a higher Speed will go first, followed by the others in decreasing order. For example, if Mario has a speed of 200, Luigi a speed of 180, and two other combatants have speeds of 190 and 150, Mario goes first, followed by the combatant with 190, then Luigi, then the combatant with 150. In the Mario & Luigi games, Speed can be increased with a Level Up and can be given a boost with the Bonus Wheel. In Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars, Speed can only be increased by wearing certain armour and accessories. In all games, Mario starts with higher speed than Luigi.
In Mario & Luigi: Brothership, if an enemy ambushes Mario and Luigi from behind in the overworld, the Bros. have their speeds set to 1, losing all ties. As compensation, this no longer causes the Trip status effect.
Status Effects[]
SPD-Up[]
SPD-Up is a status effect that can be experienced in every game. It is shown by rising blue streaks or an expanding blue circular aura around the character. The affected character is able to perform an action sooner than normal. Mario, Luigi, and Paper Mario can get this effect by using a Battle Card in Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam; in Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time, the Bros. can eat a Blue Pepper to get the effect.
Peps can also give their allies this effect in Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story by turning blue and merging with an ally of their choice, at the cost of killing themselves in the process. In Mario & Luigi: Brothership, Mario and Luigi can get this by getting knocked down and being fed a 1-Up Mushroom. Seedle R's can also throw a transparent pale blue ball at their allies to give this status effect. Bosses in Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam also have their speed increased at low health in addition to POW-Up.
SPD-Down[]
Characters affected with SPD-Down will be forced to attack later. Some enemies in Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga can give this status effect to Mario and Luigi. The effect is indicated by a streaking blue flash with an arrow pointing downward. In the 3DS remake, an enemy hit with a First Strike via Hammers might get hit with this effect.
In Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time, Mario and Luigi can give the status effect (which is now indicated by a shrinking blue circle around the victim) by using the Ice Flower on their enemies.
Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story has this ailment indicated by blue streaks flowing downward. Durmite can inflict this attack. In the 3DS version of the game, Mario and Luigi can give their foes this condition with a First Strike via hammer.
Mario & Luigi: Dream Team has this given by the Virus enemy, but only if the Virus is blue. The effect returns in Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam, where the Bros. and Paper Mario can use a Battle Card to weaken an enemy's Speed stat.
