Snow Spikes are a variant of Spikes which appear as enemies that appear in a few Mario games. They first appear in New Super Mario Bros.

Profile

Physical description

Snow Spikes look like Spikes except with a light blue body. Snow Spikes also wear wear snow goggles, snow boots and a snow hat, given that they live in snowy areas. Snow Spikes also wear a black shell on their back.

Behavior

A Snow Spikes mainly attack by tossing Snowballs, which roll along the ground and become increasingly large as it rolls down into the snow.

In Super Mario series

Snow Spikes make their only appearance in World 5-1. Their only attack is to hurl snowballs at Mario/Luigi which cause damage upon contact, the Snowballs roll along the snowy grounds getting progressively bigger as they roll, ironically, the Snowballs cannot be destroyed with the effects of a Fire Flower, the only way to destroy the Snowballs is with the effects of a Mega Mushroom or Starman or having them roll into a solid wall, these snowballs can even kill other enemies in their rolling path. Snow Spikes themselves can be taken out easily with stomps or the effects a Fire Flower, Blue Shell, Starman, or Mega Mushroom.

Super Mario Maker 2

Although Snow Spikes don't appear in Super Mario Maker 2, regular Spikes behave similarly to the Snow Spikes when placed in the snow-ice themes. Unlike Snow Spikes, a Spike's Snowballs do not increase in size as they roll across the grounds in the Super Mario World and New Super Mario Bros. U styles whether or not the ground is snowy, and they do not hurt Mario if he jumps on them, rather, this will just dissipate the Snowball.

Paper Mario: Sticker Star

Snow Spikes reappear in Paper Mario: Sticker Star where only appear in various levels of World 4 in this game. They are usually found atop snowy hills attempting to strike Mario with snowballs from a distance or atop the hill, Mario can destroy any incoming Snowballs with his Hammer however if he is hit by one, he will take damage and be rolled down the hill with the snowball forcing him to restart his trek up the slope. Sometimes, Shiny Goombas are seen running atop the rolling Snowballs and if Mario destroys the rolling Snowball, he will engage the Shiny Goomba in battle however if he is hit by the rolling Snowball, he will be rolled down the hill and engage the Shiny Goomba in battle upon hitting the bottom however due to taking damage, Mario will not get a Perfect Bonus in this instance even if he destroys the Shiny Goomba in a single turn, the Snowballs can also be avoided by hiding under the shelter spots on the hills. Once Mario gets near a Snow Spike atop it's hill, it will attempt to engage him in battle. In battle, Snow Spikes only attack Mario by jumping on him and throwing snowballs at him, the Snowballs can either damage Mario or roll across the ground ejecting him from the battle so Mario should take down a Snow Spike upon sight of it's Snowball. Snow Spikes usually drop Snowball stickers when defeated. Note that using an Ice Flower sticker on them will not damage them however all Fire-based Stickers deal double damage, the Snow Spikes give heaps of Coins upon getting a perfect bonus.

Paper Mario: The Origami King

Snow Spikes return in Paper Mario: The Origami King behaving as they did in Paper Mario: Sticker Star. They can be seen in Ice Vellumental Mountain and Bowser's Castle and they once again throw snowballs outside of battle and commonly roll them down the hills, just as before Mario can Hammer a rolling Snowball to destroy one but if he is hit by one, he will roll down the hill with the Snowball taking damage when it hits the wall at the bottom. In battle, if a Snow Spike hold a snowball above it's heads, jump attacks will not deal any damage to them upon the first jump.

Trivia

• Flipruses in New Super Mario Bros. U behave similarly to Snow Spikes and also make the same sound as one when tossing their Snowballs.
• The Nintendo DS Pocket Edition Guide by Prima mistakenly referred to Snow Spikes as Penguins despite them not looking much like Penguins at all.
• As of New Super Mario Bros. Wii, regular Spikes have commonly rolled their Spiked Balls down hills in a similar fashion to Snow Spikes rolling their Snowballs.
