The Sniffle Thwomp is an enemy that can be encountered in Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story. They are found in Bowser Castle, more specifically in the underground tunnels. They are a variant of Thwomp that has caught the common cold.
Description[]
Sniffle Thwomps resemble their "regular" counterparts superficially, but their body is blue with lighter blue spines and their pupils are slanted lines that point towards the "nose," which has snot dripping out of it. The creature has an ice pack that has an aqua colour with two white dots, and is held shut by a red ribbon.
Behaviour[]
Overworld[]
In the field, Sniffle Thwomps hover around the area, trying to smash Mario and/or Luigi from above. However, their slam is not very precise and can be avoided by sidestepping. If the Sniffle Thwomp lands on a Bro. (or is touched from the side), it will start combat with the duo.
Combat[]
Sniffle Thwomps have three attacks, with their first attack being the regular Thwomp's smash attack. Mario and Luigi have to use their Hammers to block this attack, but if the target pulls out his hammer too quickly, the Thwomp will stop, only to resume falling when the Bro. swings his hammer or drops it. If the Thwomp nails the attack, the target will be subjected to heavy damage and may be stunned. The second attack starts out the same, but the Thwomp will fall short (telegraphed by arrows appearing instead of hammers on the defense button icons), sneezing upon landing; this generates a shockwave that the Bros. must jump over, lest they get poisoned. The Sniffle Thwomps' third attack has them faint, after which two Shy Guys carry the creature. This attack requires a well-timed hammer strike to block. During this last attack, the ice pack that the Sniffle Thwomp was wearing will get dropped, but it will put it back on after the attack concludes (provided it survives the counterattack; if the Sniffle Thwomp somehow dies, the ice pack grows legs and flees the scene).
Because of their cold, Sniffle Thwomps will take damage when their turn concludes, taking 13 damage. As such, provided it is not attacked at all, a Sniffle Thwomp will destroy itself in 20 turns.
The Sniffle Thwomp is a Level 28 monster that has a hit point maximum of 256, an attack power of 194, a defense of 125, and a speed of 23. It takes half damage from fire-based weapons and is immune to the Burn status effect and has half chances of being instantly destroyed by a weapon infused with the Sudden Death effect as well as half the chances of having having its attributes lowered. Additionally, Sniffle Thwomps give 400 Experience with their loot including 60 Coins, with 1 in 10 drops including a Supersyrup Jar (a Syrup Jar variant that restores 20 Special Points) and 1 in 5 including a Glutton Ring (which Bowser can use to eat two Drumsticks per turn).
Nomenclature[]
In Japanese, Sniffle Thwomps are called Zuttsun (written ヅッツン) which is derived from zutsū ("headache," written ずつう in Hiragana and ズツウ in Katakana) and Dossun (the regular Thwomp's name; written ドッスン). Korean translates their name literally, creating Huljjeok Kungkung (Huljeok means "sniffle" while Kungkung refers to the regular Thwomp; the name is written 훌쩍쿵쿵.). Their Spanish name is Roca Resfriacuda, from Roca Picuda (the regular Thwomp's name, literally meaning "spiky rock") and resfriado (which refers to the common cold). Italian calls them Eccjomp, from Twomp (the regular Thwomp's name) and eccjù (a sneezing onomatopoeia). In French, their name is Thwnif (pun on "Thwomp" and snif ("sniffle"), pronounced "Thoo-NEEF"). They are called Fieberblock in German, from Steinblock (the regular Thwomp's name) and Fieber (a synonym of Ritte in the sense of "fever").
