The Snaptor is an enemy from Mario & Luigi: Brothership. They are avian monsters who serve Zokket's forces. Snaptors can be encountered commonly on Desolatt Island and Merrygo Island, and they're also used by the Extension Corps (except Ecks, who can fly naturally to make up for being legless).

Description[]

Snaptors are avians with red feathers, yellow eyes with black slit pupils, and a silver beak. Their neck is stretchy and looks like a spring, and their feet are yellow with grey talons.

Behaviour[]

In the field, Snaptors swoop at intruders in their territory.

Combat[]

Snaptors are known to attack by stretching their head towards their prey for a peck or bite attack. Mario and Luigi can block this move by swinging their hammers at the birds' heads, damaging the avians if successful. A Snaptor that cackles prior to this move will attack the opposite brother.

Another attack that the Snaptor can perform is by carrying off a Bro. and throwing him at the other. The Bro. who did not get carried off must stomp the Snaptor. Occasionally, the abducted Bro. may scream, in which case his captor rolls his body into the free Bro. as it swoops over the latter not unlike a bowling ball. If stomped, the abductee takes minor damage.

A Snaptor can also bring in a boulder and bowl it into its target. This must be jumped over. Occasionally, it may bring in a Spikely, which must be ducked under (no input required).

Due to the Snaptor being able to fly, ground-based weaponry will miss them, and using the Flash Clock will cause the move to be redirected into a ground-based enemy, if there is one. If none appear, the Flash Clock will be voided.

Three of them appear as a miniboss on Merrygo Island, where Mario and Luigi defend a Concordian civilian from the birds. After the fight, more attack, but Technikki drives them away with one of her bombs.

Variants[]

Mega Snaptor[]

A larger version of the Snaptor can be found in the game, referred to as "Mega Snaptor." They appear twice in the game, the first time during the introduction and the second time on Lottacoins Island. These Snaptors look nearly identical to their smaller counterparts, but are, hence their name, bigger, and their crest is different. Mario and Luigi fight only one specimen in the game, with the one in the introduction only serving as a cameo appearance.

Mega Snaptors can use the same stretching peck attack as their smaller counterparts, but the bowling and abduction attacks have been fused together into one technique with the latter involving springs instead of Spikelies, and Mega Snaptors have two new moves that their smaller counterparts lack. One has them stand in front of their target and peck him without stretching their neck. This must be countered by smashing the avians' head with a hammer when their beak is about to make impact. They can also shoot tornadoes which must be jumped over. In the Lottacoins Island fight, this causes a device in the background to activate. Luigi can perform his Luigi Logic skill to align the pipes and generate a water current. Should this happen, the Mega Snaptors will get knocked down by the water current and become vulnerable to ground-based attacks as their defense drops. Mega Snaptors are of Level 16 with 1700 hit points, an attack power of 60, a defense of 38, and a speed of 200, giving 1,450 Experience upon defeat. Their loot drop consists of 300 Coins and the Damage Shield Battle Plug.

Glohm-Infused Snaptor[]

When Reclusa goes on a rampage, some Snaptors contract Glohm, becoming more dangerous. These Snaptors are much stronger than their uninfected selves, and can summon a shield to defend against jump-based attacks. The shield can be destroyed via Special Attacks (though the Flash Clock and 3D Green Shell will not work due to the enemy's ability to fly).

Behind the Scenes[]

The Snaptor is based on a crocodile clip or plier, especially with the beak. Its name comes from the word "raptor" (referencing how it looks like a bird of prey) and "snap" (referencing how pliers can break electrical cords).

Nomenclature[]

In Japanese, Snaptors are called "Goīru" (written ゴイール). This comes from an elongation and voicing of the word "coil" translated into Japanese (which would result in koiru, written コイル), which could be a reference to their coiled neck. The Chinese dub calls them "Coil Birds" (Xiànquān Niǎo; written 线圈鸟); as with their Japanese name, this could reference their coiled necks. Spanish translates their name as "Garráctor," which comes from garra ("talon"), pasjarraco ("big bird"), and raptor ("raptor"). In Portuguese, Snaptors are called "Bictérux," from a pun on bico (beak) and the Greek word pterux ("wing"; written πτέρῠξ). In Italian, they have the name Rapax, which comes from rapace ("raptor"). French translates their name as Amptéryx (from ampère ("ampere," referring to a measurement of the strength of an electric current) and archaeoptéryx ("archaeopteryx," referring to an extinct animal that may have been an ancestor of birds)). The Korean dub calls them "Goil" (written 고일) with the same origin as the Japanese name without elongation of the I in "coil."

Mega Snaptors have identical names to their counterparts in most dubs, but with either the word Mega placed before their smaller counterpart's name or the suffix Mega-. The only exceptions are Spanish, which calls them Megarráctor, a pun on Garráctor (referring to the original Snaptor) and "Mega," and Chinese, which calls them "heavyweight Coil Birds" (Zhòngliàngjí Xiànquān Niǎo, written 重量级线圈鸟).

Trivia[]

  • If the player kills a Mega Snaptor with the Surprise Iron Ball Battle Plug, no experience will be given. This is most likely a bug.
