Not to be confused with the enemy of the same name or Metal Gear Solid's protagonist, a Snake is a type of block that debuts in Super Mario World. Snakes can also be called Caterpillars. They tend to appear in boss stages. Snakes get their name from the classic game Snake, where you control a serpentine arrangement of dots.

Snakes are activated immediately if you stand on their upper side. There is no way to stop them until the snakes reach their destination.

In their debut appearance, Snakes are brown, like a used Block. More recent appearances have given them different colours. Super Mario Galaxy 2 shows them as purple. 2-D platformers show them as green. Also, an icy variant appears in New Super Mario Bros. Wii. It behaves the same but is slippery, though a Penguin Suit can negate this penalty.

Additionally, in Super Mario Galaxy 2, Snakes appear in Bowser's Lava Lair and the Boo Moon Galaxy. In New Super Mario Bros. 2, Snakes appear to move on their own. Not only do we use them to cross gaps, but they also function as obstacles, their bodies getting in our way at times. They can be reproduced in Super Mario Maker by putting a long block row onto a track, though you still move on their upperside. They return proper in Super Mario Maker 2, where you can select the path they follow. In Mario Party 10, they appear in the Minigame Snake Block Party, where they are called Snake Blocks.
