Snake Block (or Snake Platform) are a type of block that first debuts in Super Mario World. Snakes Blocks can also be called Caterpillar Block. They tend to appear in boss stages. Snakes Blocks get their name from the classic game Snake, where you follow a serpentine arrangement of dots. Despite this, some of them can cross themselves, while crossing your own path with too tight of a loop in Snake kills you.

Snake Blocks are activated immediately if you stand on their upper side. There is no way to stop them until the Snake Blocks reach their destination.

In their debut appearance, Snakes Blocks are brown; as such, they resembled a line of used Blocks. More recent appearances have given them different colours. Super Mario Galaxy 2 shows them as purple. 2-D platformers show them as green.

Appearances[]

Super Mario World[]

Snake Blocks make their debut in Super Mario World. They are seen in the castles in World 5 (Forest of Illusion) and World 7 (Valley of Bowser).

New Super Mario Bros. DS[]

Snake Blocks make their New Super Mario Bros. debut in the first New Super Mario Bros, where Mario used them to make his way to the end of World 7's castle and to the top of World 8's second tower stage.

New Super Mario Bros. Wii[]

An icy variant appears in New Super Mario Bros. Wii. It behaves the same but is slippery, though a Penguin Suit can negate this penalty. These "Icy Snake Blocks" appeared in the castle stage of World 3, which marked their only appearance in the New Super Mario Bros. series.

Super Mario Galaxy 2[]

Additionally, in Super Mario Galaxy 2, Snake Blocks appear in Bowser's Lava Lair and the Boo Moon Galaxy; their function is simlar to most games, though in 3-dimensional gameplay.

New Super Mario Bros. 2[]

Snake Blocks make a return in this game, and they can be found in many stages aside from fortress-type stages. This time, and contrary to other games, Snake Blocks appear to move on their own and do so silently. Not only do we use them to cross gaps, but they also function as obstacles, their bodies getting in our way at times. Mario can also get crushed by them, losing one of his lives instantly.

Super Mario Maker[]

Snake Blocks can be reproduced in Super Mario Maker by putting a long block row onto a track, though you still move on their upper side.

Super Mario Maker 2[]

Snake Blocks return proper in Super Mario Maker 2, where you can select the path they follow. They come in blue and green, being faster if they are blue.

Mario Party 10[]

Snake Blocks appear in the Minigame Snake Block Party, where they are used to cross gaps. Much like in New Super Mario Bros. 3DS, Snake Blocks move on their own.
