Smeech

Smeeches are flying pig-like enemies seen in Super Mario Galaxy 2. They resemble a pig head with wings, large lips, blue beady eyes, and blushed cheeks. Whenever they see Yoshi, they will chase after him and latch themselves onto his mouth. They are for the most part however, relatively harmless enemies.

In Super Mario Galaxy 2[]

Smeeches are first seen in Super Mario Galaxy 2. In this game, they are mainly found in various Galaxies that have Yoshi such as the Yoshi Star Galaxy, Hightail Falls Galaxy, Haunty Halls Galaxy, Starshine Beach Galaxy, Sweet Mystery Galaxy, and the Flash Black Galaxy. They are usually seen hovering idly around an area until Mario/Luigi and Yoshi approaches the area, at which point they will chase after Yoshi. If the Smeech manages to catch Yoshi or if Yoshi attempts to swallow the Smeech, it will latch itself onto Yoshi's mouth and start sucking on him, preventing him from swallowing anything (be it fruits or enemies). Smeeches cannot harm Yoshi but they can be an annoyance if Yoshi doesn't shake them off, a quick Head Shake is enough to flick one away. Smeeches can also be defeated with mere stomps or Star Spins. Also, if Mario or Luigi is to approach a Smeech on their own, the Smeech will turn and flee. If the plumbers dismount Yoshi while a Smeech is on him, the Smeech will detach itself and remain idle for a few seconds before fleeing. Upon defeat Smeeches will drop one Coin if stomped or three Star Bits if spun into. Smeeches commonly appear in Galaxies where Yoshi is primarily used, they are also often seen in certain Prankster Comet missions.

Trivia[]

Smeech is a portmanteau of the words "smooch" and "leech".
Smeeches bear a striking resemblance to the Poink enemies from Bianco Hills in Super Mario Sunshine, in both their appearance and their method of attack, as these creatures would attach themselves to F.L.U.D.D.'s nozzle in the same way as Smeeches attached themselves to Yoshi's mouth.
- Smeeches also bear a faint resemblance to Love Bubbles from Mario and Luigi: Partners in Time.
The Smeeches behavior seems to replicate the Flipbug's as they also flee from Mario/Luigi when approached normally however chase them whenever they have special assistance (under the effects of the Bee Mushroom for the Flipbug and riding Yoshi for the Smeech) however the difference is the Flipbugs become harmful enemies when chasing the plumbers (as they're under the effects of the power-up) whereas the Smeeches remain harmless.
If Yoshi goes up to a Smeech and another one is already on his lips, the Smeech won't take any notice of him and keep hovering around like normal, making an easy target to be stomped on.
If one manages to reach the end of a level with a Smeech attached to Yoshi, it will show up during their “You got a Star!” animation, still sucking on Yoshi’s mouth.
