Smash Bombs (Japanese Sumasshubōmu; written すますしゅぼうむ in Hiragana and スマッシュボーム in Katakana) are items in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. They are a false variety of Smash Ball that serves as a trap, although rather than bestowing a Final Smash, Smash Bombs explode upon being ruptured, hence their name.

Description[]

Smash Bombs look similar to Smash Balls, but Smash Bombs have their lines switched (The thicker line is now horizontal). If someone breaks them, the Smash Bomb's volatile energy will punch outward in an explosive manner, creating an X-shaped supernova whose spikes are usually diagonal. These fake Smash Balls move towards fighters, increasing their chances of rupturing.

Behind the scenes[]

Smash Bombs are named for their resemblance to real Smash Balls, with "ball" being replaced with "bomb," referencing how they explode when ruptured.

Nomenclature[]

In Chinese, German, and Russian, Smash Bombs have their name translated literally (German yields Smash-Bombe, Chinese yields Luàn dòu dàn (written 亂鬥彈), and Russian yields Smesh-bomba (written Смеш-бомба).). In Dutch, French and Spanish, the Smash Bomb's name is changed to "Fake Smash Ball" (Nepsmashbal in Dutch (Nep means "false" or "fake."), (Fausse Balle Smasche in French, Bola Smás Falsa in Spanish). In Italian, Smash Balls are called "Smash Orbs" (Sfera Smasci) so their fake counterpart is called the "Fake Smash Orb" (Sfera Smasci Finta).
